For this list, we've collected educational apps from a variety of categories that can replace popular commercial software. In many cases, the open source options listed here offer features that aren't matched by their closed source counterparts. And while we limited our list to 50 apps, you can find many more on the Web.

The six top free online tools were selected from available web 2.0 tools for teaching and learning using presentations, blogging, and bookmarking online resources. There are many excellent online tools available in these three categories, making the selection difficult at best. However, the selection was made based on reviewing available online resources along with other contributions and feedback from teachers.

The yearly Horizon Report was just released and lists 12 technologies worth watching in education. The technologies  are broken into several categories, based on when they think they will be adopted.

Then The Manual Works Prompter is for YOU! The Manual Works Prompter is a simple HTML Application (HTA file), and you can check and modify its content using any text editor including Notepad. Like a Web page, it needs no installation whatever and you can run it immediately from ANY media, including diskette and memory stick. The Manual Works Prompter loads, edits, and saves scripts as simple text files (TXT files). All you need to do is remember to save or move them to the SAME directory as the Prompter HTA file (the so-called Prompter directory).
