Seeing Like a State - 4 views

  • The state did pay attention to poaching, which impinged on its claim to revenue in wood or its claim to royal game, but otherwise it typically ignored the vast, complex, and negotiated social uses of the forest for hunting and gathering, pasturage, fishing, charcoal making, trapping, and collecting food and valuable minerals as well as the forest's significance for magic, worship, refuge, and so on.

By having the tunnel vision, they made a quick rash decision, and not worry about other potential benefits of the forest such as the hunting and its value to certain people. They could have easily used the land for better uses, yet did not because of their tunnel vision. They thought of the immediate results, not of the bigger picture at hand.

Timeline: 1960s - YES! Magazine - 0 views

    • Tatiana McCuaig

The 1960's can be seen as a time when the country cared the most about human rights. The timeline shows how the country advocated for women's rights, a healthy environment through the Clean Air Act in 1970, and in human rights through the establishment of the Peace Corp. The country also made strides in civil rights, with Martin Luther King Jr. delivering the "I Have a Dream" speech, and winning a nobel peace prize. The country also protested the war, burning draft cards, having anti war demonstrations, and so on. The wanted to save lives and not have them lost in a war that they did not support.

What I found interesting is how the When and How to say it can be so easily linked. The "how" states that one should ask the audience to think about it, such as the students having to list 8 or 2 reasons, and how that changed their perspective. This ties in to the "when" because it wears the audience down more, having to make them list 8 reasons, thus making them tired and having less energy to oppose the thought of senior exams, reevaluating wether or not they really think that they are a bad idea.

Jay-Z vs the Game: Lessons for the American Primacy Debate | Marc Lynch - 3 views

  • As Jay-Z got older and more powerful, the marginal benefits of such battles declined and the costs increased even as the number of would-be rivals escalated

This methodology obviously worked for him, now owning part of the Brooklyn Nets, albiet a small part, producing an incredibly successful album with Kanye West, being featured on multiple tracks with the G.O.O.D Music group, and marrying Beyonce. He didn't try and follow his predecessors, and did not let others like The Game sway his postions. His tenacity led him to the top, and he and his wife are one of the richest and most successful couples in Hollywood.

Sample Chapter for Fung, A.: Empowered Participation: Reinventing Urban Democracy. - 2 views

  • These initiatives transformed the CPD and the CPS into the most participatory-democratic public organizations of their kind in any large American city.
    • Tatiana McCuaig

Another reason why I feel that the CPD and CPS were so praised was because of their willingness to listen to their constituents. The people of the cities voiced their concerns, and by having the town government listen, they were able to accomplish progress and set a tone and standard for their schools and neighborhoods.

McAllen, Texas and the high cost of health care : The New Yorker - 2 views

  • In Washington, the aim of health-care reform is not just to extend medical coverage to everybody but also to bring costs under control. Spending on doctors, hospitals, drugs, and the like now consumes more than one of every six dollars we earn. The financial burden has damaged the global competitiveness of American businesses and bankrupted millions of families, even those with insurance.
    • Tatiana McCuaig

When putting the cost of healthcare into terms of it being one of every six dollars we earn, I can easily see why Obama has pushed for the Affordable Care Act. When more than 15% of our income is spent on treating the sick, I can see how it needs to be made more widely available and affordable. To spend 15% of your income on an illness is absurd, and I feel that it hits families that are living in the lower income brackets even harder, where every dollar they can save counts.

Dan Dennett: Dangerous memes | Video on TED.com - 2 views

I find it interesting how most of the ideas that spread the most over the internet and through technology are the toxic ideas. The toxic memes establish a prominent position in our mind and that is what many focus on. We are the carriers of these toxic memes, much like the ant is of the fluke parasite.

Are political parties growing more unified? - 4 views

  • Poole and Rosenthal also put out “party unity” scores which measure how frequently members vote with their parties on key issues.
    • Tatiana McCuaig

The parties seem to be sticking together more so than they ever have before. Instead of having a few Democrats vote Republican, or vice versa, what is happening now is that they vote within the party, making the two different parties even more polarized. This can cause a multitude of problems, and has, seeing as little can be done when parties are unwilling to budge on an initiative that may be proposed by their counter part.

Data & Design How-to's Note 1: Where is your evidence? | Drawing by Numbers - 2 views

  • This photograph communicates evidence of an atrocity in a completely different way than through statistics or a list of names. You are immediately made to empathise. This demonstrates what evidence can do: it can tell a strong and memorable story.
    • Tatiana McCuaig

The glasses are an immediate visual that can be seen. As the saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words" and in this case that is clear. The picture evokes an emotion and is able to tell a story. People can be lost in the transition from human to statistic, yet pictures and visuals put more into each piece of evidence.

Patternicity: Finding Meaningful Patterns in Meaningless Noise: Scientific American - 7 views

  • Sometimes A really is connected to B; sometimes it is not
    • Tatiana McCuaig

I know I have seen this countless times before, with people making connections between things that are completely unrelated. It seems that there is trouble with believing the simple answer, and feel that there needs to be a deeper meaning.

By putting faces on these problems, they are giving the problem an embodiment. This can be detrimental because the face that can be given can later become a stereotype, and give that problem a specific face from a specific group, that later can be discriminated against because it is seen as the living embodiment of that problem.

  • the book eventually sold at least 230,000 copies in the U.S. Hayek went on a U.S. lecture tour, including prestigious places like Harvard University, and he decided he rather liked being a lightning rod for freedom.

This goes back to what Caitlin said about how the book changed from being widely unknown, to doing a complete 180 and becoming highly popular and getting such high attention from places such as Harvard University. Hayek also decided that he would use his publicity to not only his advantage, but the advantage of others.

What Makes Us Happy? - Joshua Wolf Shenk - The Atlantic - 0 views

It seems that they could judge these men's overall happiness through their physical appearance as well. This really is an intense breakdown of the body physically to see if it is possible to judge joy through purely the body

This is the complete opposite of the situation that Dahara is in with her new born. Carmen has multiple resources available with simply a phone call, while Dahara has to solve any worries on her own or with the few resources in the village
