Pakistan drone attacks kill nine suspected militants - 3 views

  •
Drone attacks are actually a major topic in this year's debate resolution (about troops in several countries, including countries in the Middle East). A major argument against the use of drones is the fact that they are unmanned. This means that the risk of losing soldiers is taken out of the equation when ordering military strikes. This risk has been one of the foremost deterrents against unnecessary military operations in the past. While the operations may be effective, many civilians are killed in the process, and there is significant collateral damage. Lastly, since the drones are stealthy, it is easier for the U.S. to evade accusations by not confessing to owning or using drones.
  •
Drone attacks are a key part of the US's couterterrorism strategy in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. They have proven fairly successful at targeting militants but they also often kill innocent civilians by accident. Many see drones as being much more cost effective then other counterinsurgency or nation building efforts in those countries. A growing debate in the military now is the shift from counterinsurgency (nation building) to counterteorrism (drones) because it is much more cost effective and it requries less military casualties. Originally the drones were only used in Afghanistan, but now they have started targetting terrorists in Pakistan. The civilian lives lost in drone attacks in Pakistan hurt US-Pakistan relations.

Taliban vow to respect women, despite history of oppression - 3 views

  •
Should be interesting to watch how the Taliban will execute this vow, especially since their spokesperson gave a pretty vague answer as to how the respect for women's rights would look within the Taliban.

I think it is very interesting that they feel the need to portray themselves as more moderate. It seems like their priority right now is getting some level of legitimacy. I also found it interesting that it used the example of Pakistan as a Muslim country with more rights. The government of Pakistan is openly supportive of the Taliban and has a history of providing financial and logistical help, so I wonder if they have had an influence on the Taliban's apparent moderation of their beliefs surrounding women. Here is an article about the Taliban's relationship with Pakistan: https://www.cfr.org/article/pakistans-support-taliban-what-know
  •
I also think it will be very interesting to see whether the Taliban follow through with the vow and what respect means to them. It seems like everyone is waiting to see if this vow is an indicator that the Taliban have changed their ways since their strict form of rule in the 1990s.

It's interesting to see the difference in response. I didn't hear about this issue until the death toll approached 1,000 and haven't heard of how other countries have provided support.
  •
Same as Will, I didn't hear about this until recently and also want to know more about how they are supporting so many evacuees. Are they receiving foreign aid from other countries? And, are the evacuees all still in Pakistan, or are they getting refugee status in other countries?
