Global Peace Index - 1 views

  •
Both Japan and France rank in the top 50 for Global Peace Rankings-- Japan 8th and France 48th. The biggest difference in their rankings comes from France's possession of heavy and nuclear weapons. The Japanese have limited possession of heavy and nuclear weapons as a result of the pacifist constitution they were forced to adopt following WWII which limited their ability to arm for war. Furthermore, France is involved in more conflicts and exports more weapons than Japan, which is also heavily related to the restrictions placed on Japan following WWII. However, Japan has a worse record when it comes to relations with neighbors which may be related to actions from WWII and rising tensions between Japan, China, and South Korea. Yet, perhaps unrelated to WWII and relating more to culture of society, France has a higher level of violent demonstrations and internal organized conflict than Japan. Japan has a homogenous population that has a main focus of work and a culture that accepts the social and economic hierarchy, but France has a more heterogeneous population with many disenfranchised groups that were once colonized that continue to face discrimination.

Sudan Is Focus of U.S. Efforts to Improve Ties With Israel - 5 views

I wonder if these efforts have been in the works for a long time or if Trump is pushing them through to improve his chances in the upcoming election.

Russia Seeks Improved Relations with the E.U. - 1 views

  •
Russia has recently shifted from policies designed to preserve self-sovereignty ideologically to more practical policies geared toward economic growth and security. Russia is now seeking to improve relations with the E.U. for these reasons, but Germany has requested concessions in return, mainly help in helping Transnistria, a region governed by a pro-Russian movement. It would be interesting to see how far Russia is willing to go in order to solidify relations.
  •
It will also be interesting to see what comes from the talks both today and tomorrow between Russia, France, and Germany, and how France and Germany feel about Russia's involvement or if they feel that there are certain things that Russia must acheive to gain involvment on the level it wants.

Plea to Islamic State for Release of Steven Sotloff - 2 views

  •
This article is super interesting to me because it's the first time I have ever seen someone who isn't government related directly reach out to the ISIS and challenge them so well. I like how she studies Islam and tells Mr. Baghdadi that he is going directly against what his own religion preaches which I find super interesting. All in all great article and I hope Mr. Baghdadi responds well to her plea.

. Directly, this article is a psycological analysis scientists have done about how misinformation affects peoples actions and decisions, but I also think that it plays a role in the election, foreign relations, and the turns the economy takes.

Russia Accepts Invitation to Attend NATO Summit Meeting - 0 views

  •
Russia is starting to open up to better relations with the West, especially a security alliance like NATO because they have common security interests. Russia has finally withdrawn its troops from Georgia, allowing the dialogue to take place. I wonder whether Russia intends apply for NATO membership within a few years.
  •
I believe this article is highly pertinent to our discussions on globalization. Historically, there was an East-West divide, exemplified by the Iron Curtain. However, Russia's attempts to improve cooperation and communication with NATO signifies the start of deconstruction of this divide. Even if the NATO summit does not itself improve relations, I wonder if it will still serve as a precedent for future talks.

The Power Struggle Among China's Elite - 1 views

  •
This article is about the growing strength of China. China is run by the Politburo, a 9 member committee. In 2010 there will be a new era of leaders on the Politburo because seven of the members will reach retirement age. No one knows yet if this transition will be smooth or who will take over as the next Premier. Another interesting thing to note is that there are many divisions within the communist party.
  •
It would be interesting to see if China's leadership transition will cause changes in its political system and culture. It could be an opportunity for better relations with the West, if the new leaders are more open-minded to change. China's current government is concerning, as the highest-ranking foreign relations minister is ranked only 50th in power in the Chinese government.

Samuel P. Huntington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 2 views

  • graduated with distinction from Yale University at age 18
  • he was denied tenure in 1959
  • he began teaching at age 23
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • completed his Ph.D.
  • associate professor of government at Columbia University
  • Deputy Director of The Institute for War and Peace Studies
  • invited to return to Harvard with tenure in 1963
  • co-founded and co-edited Foreign Policy
  • became prominent with his Political Order in Changing Societies (1968), a work that challenged the conventional view of modernization theorists, that economic and social progress would produce stable democracies in recently decolonized countries
  • In 1993, Huntington provoked great debate among international relations theorists with the interrogatively-titled "The Clash of Civilizations?", an extremely influential, oft-cited article published in Foreign Affairs magazine. Its description of post-Cold War geopolitics contrasted with the influential End of History thesis advocated by Francis Fukuyama.
  • Critics (for example articles in Le Monde Diplomatique) call The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order the theoretical legitimization of American-led Western aggression against China and the world's Islamic and Orthodox cultures.
  • Huntington's last book, Who Are We? The Challenges to America's National Identity, was published in May 2004. Its subject is the meaning of American national identity and the possible cultural threat posed to it by large-scale Latino immigration, which Huntington warns could "divide the United States into two peoples, two cultures, and two languages".
  • In 1986, Huntington was nominated for membership to the National Academy of Sciences, with his nomination voted on by the entire academy, with most votes, by scientists mainly unfamiliar with the nominee, being token votes. Professor Serge Lang, a Yale University mathematician, disturbed this electoral status quo by challenging Huntington's nomination. Lang campaigned for others to deny Huntington membership, and eventually succeeded; Huntington was twice nominated and twice rejected

Francis Fukuyama - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 1 views

  • He is best known for his book The End of History and the Last Man (1992), which argued that the worldwide spread of liberal democracies may signal the end point of humanity's sociocultural evolution and become the final form of human government.
  • also associated with the rise of the neoconservative movement,[2] from which he has since distanced himself.
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in classics from Cornell University, where he studied political philosophy under Allan Bloom.[5][8] He initially pursued graduate studies in comparative literature at Yale University, going to Paris for six months to study under Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida, but became disillusioned and switched to political science at Harvard University.[5
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • He is now Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow and resident in the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University.[
  • Fukuyama is best known as the author of The End of History and the Last Man, in which he argued that the progression of human history as a struggle between ideologies is largely at an end, with the world settling on liberal democracy after the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Fukuyama predicted the eventual global triumph of political and economic liberalism:[citation needed]
  • As a key Reagan Administration contributor to the formulation of the Reagan Doctrine, Fukuyama is an important figure in the rise of neoconservatism, although his works came out years after Irving Kristol's 1972 book
  • In a New York Times article of February 2006, Fukuyama, in considering the ongoing Iraq War, stated: "What American foreign policy needs is not a return to a narrow and cynical realism, but rather the formulation of a 'realistic Wilsonianism' that better matches means to ends."[14] In regard to neoconservatism he went on to say: "What is needed now are new ideas, neither neoconservative nor realist, for how America is to relate to the rest of the world — ideas that retain the neoconservative belief in the universality of human rights, but without its illusions about the efficacy of American power and hegemony to bring these ends about
  • Fukuyama began to distance himself from the neoconservative agenda of the Bush administration, citing its overly militaristic basis and embrace of unilateral armed intervention, particularly in the Middle East. By late 2003, Fukuyama had voiced his growing opposition to the Iraq War[15] and called for Donald Rumsfeld's resignation as Secretary of Defense.[16]

As China Moves In, Serbia Reaps Benefits, With Strings Attached - The New York Times - 0 views

China has poured $900 billion toward revamping Serbia's infrastructure. Serbia will be along the New Silk Road: a transport corridor running from China to Western Europe. The Chinese initiative is an example of their growing sphere of influence. The EU is concerned since its relations with the West Balkan countries is already weak.

I thought this was a little funny how seemingly petty the gov seems to be...also there is a post colonial analysis here showing how their foreign policy relates and interacts with their former colonists
  •
Aren't India and Britain allies on the world stage now? I wonder how little jabs like this boost rivals like China and Russia in the public eye, or in other cases, economically.

Amnesty International to close Hong Kong offices this year - 0 views

  •
While not directly related to the freedom and equality paradox, I think this article is related. As freedom is going down with government restrictions on speech in Hong Kong, equality is too (as human rights abuses are more likely to continue). So maybe the freedom-equality inverse relationship is only the case in terms of economics.

    yup, I think so.

The Most Incredible James Bond Locations in Jamaica   - Variety - 1 views

  •
Ok bare with me...I saw the new James Bond movie and aside from the overt misogny in the earlier movies I really love this character as well as the revamped modernized Bond in this movie. When filming these high budget movies the crew has a few choices...build a set in LA or go to fun and exotic parts of the world supporting their local economies...because of this I felt like this article relating to some of the locations where the movie was shot would be good for a diigo post. If you take a look at Jamacia tourism and on scene filming comprise a hefty chunck of rev for the gov.
  •
This is an interesting and entertaining article. One interesting thought relevant to comparative politics that struck me as I was reading was this: as globalization has increased, it seems like the more movies have actually been filmed in sets. Maybe this is because an increase in technology allows both -- or maybe certain industries are just growing more isolated.

Jamal Khashoggi: France releases Saudi man held over journalist's murder - BBC News - 0 views

  •
I've followed this story since the break in 2018...its quite sad to see it end in this way but more shows still the problems of major US allies. We just watch as human rights violations poor in from Saudi Arabia to maintain our oil relations. Khashoggi's death should stand as a desplay that freedom of the press, even internationally, does not exist.
