Me.dium's collaborative browsing vision When we wrote about Me.dium over four months ago, we described it as 'social browsing'. Perhaps a refinement of this would be collaborative browsing, and that would be a more precise definition of what the company is trying to do. At the heart of Me.dium is the idea that by enabling real-time discovery and communication during browsing, this will enable people to get things done faster and in ways not possible before. During my interview with the company founders, we discussed the typical scenarios for using Me.dium: You and your friend are trying to accomplish a common task; You are trying to do something on your own and meet others who are trying to do the same thing; You are observing the patterns of crowds nearby and so you are able to discover new things.

There are two ways to go about encouraging adoption of social software: fostering grassroots behaviours which develop organically from the bottom-up; or via top-down instruction. In general, the former is more desirable, as it will become self-sustaining over time - people become convinced of the tools' usefulness, demonstrate that to colleagues, and help develop usage in an ad hoc, social way in line with their actual needs.

These key users should: be open to trying new software be influential amongst their peers, thus able to help promulgate usage have the support of their managers Users who are potential evangelists should be identified at every level of management, not just amongst the higher echelons, or amongst the workforce.

This morning I found an email in my inbox telling me that I am a bad maintainer and that I am making people fork my modules. The mail was not meant to go to me, but the sender hit reply and thought he was moaning about me to someone else. Basically I was asking for my modules to be forked because I was too ### to release a new version. I don’t release a version unless I am confident it is release-worthy: when I have used it myself. Not a big deal, but it gave me food for thought about maintainance and release of Drupal modules, in general. And about how to improve the general issue of not having enough time to dedicate to a contribution In general, I think there are three reasons to maintain a module on Drupal.org You think it is fun or/and like to “give something back” It allows you to have your module improved without having to invest much time and money It works as marketing for you, as a highly visible portfolio: people see you, see your work and therefore might hire your services.

Hi John, I use Diigo as a kind of information-management tool, and I see it's great novelty in keeping the connection between the information and its source. It's indeed the only tool available that lets me interact with the source itself - highlight text, add my notes on specific highlights, comment on the whole page, tag it for later, and share it with others. I also like it's search and viewing capabilities. About the social aspect - I notice that some people, while not great writers themselves, are very good in picking out the highlights from any given text and tagging it. You can easily notice that at delicious, digg and clipmarks. On a wider perspective, imagine that top thinkers, scientists and other inspirational people start to use Diigo, and share some of their I know I for one would like to follow what Noam Chomski and Kevin Kelly are reading and finding worthy. Personal Value Precedes Network Value The one major idea behind the Del.icio.us Lesson is that personal value precedes network value. What this means is that if we are to build networks of value, then each person on the network needs to find value for themselves before they can contribute value to the network. In the case of Del.icio.us, people find value saving their personal bookmarks first and foremost.
