Me.dium Secures $15M Series B - The Dawn of Collaborative Browsing? - 0 views

  • Me.dium's collaborative browsing vision When we wrote about Me.dium over four months ago, we described it as 'social browsing'. Perhaps a refinement of this would be collaborative browsing, and that would be a more precise definition of what the company is trying to do. At the heart of Me.dium is the idea that by enabling real-time discovery and communication during browsing, this will enable people to get things done faster and in ways not possible before. During my interview with the company founders, we discussed the typical scenarios for using Me.dium: You and your friend are trying to accomplish a common task; You are trying to do something on your own and meet others who are trying to do the same thing; You are observing the patterns of crowds nearby and so you are able to discover new things.
  • So the $15M dollar question is what is Me.dium planning to do next? In a nutshell, the company is planning to spend the money on refining and scaling its sophisticated matching technology. The secret sauce here is in connecting people based on their browsing patterns.

An Adoption Strategy for Social Software in the Enterprise - 0 views

  • There are two ways to go about encouraging adoption of social software: fostering grassroots behaviours which develop organically from the bottom-up; or via top-down instruction. In general, the former is more desirable, as it will become self-sustaining over time - people become convinced of the tools' usefulness, demonstrate that to colleagues, and help develop usage in an ad hoc, social way in line with their actual needs.
  • These key users should: be open to trying new software be influential amongst their peers, thus able to help promulgate usage have the support of their managers Users who are potential evangelists should be identified at every level of management, not just amongst the higher echelons, or amongst the workforce.
  • 3. Convert key users into evangelists Training in the form of short informal sessions (face-to-face or online) and ongoing on-demand support are the basics for encouraging adoption. Too much training or too formal a setting will put users off, and is usually unnecessary.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • 2. Identify and understand key users Once you have identified key user groups, you need to know which users within that group are both influential and likely to be enthusiastic. Then consider how social software fits in to the context of their job, their daily working processes and the wider context of their group's goals.
  • Management support As well as supporting bottom-up adoption, it is beneficial for there to be top-down support, but that support has to be based on openness and transparency. Managers and team leaders must trust their staff to use the tools correctly, but they must also be forgiving if mistakes are made. There is always a learning curve associated with any new software, and some people find social software daunting because they are scared of what they perceive as a high risk of public humiliation. Managers and team leaders should: 1. Lead by example
  • 2. Lead by mandate
  • 3. Lead by reminding
  • 4. Ensure there is adequate support

The Several Habits of Wildly Successful Twitter Users » Slacker Manager - 1 views

  • It’s instant messaging with a group. You post a short message via IM, web or other utility (see below) and other Twitterers who are “following” you will see your message. Some have called Twitter a form of microblogging
  • You can add your friends cell phone numbers by sending an IM to the twitter@twitter.com contact and typing: add CELLNUMBER (where CELLNUMBER is their number)
  • you might only want to get particular types of news pushed at you
  • ...16 more annotations...
  • The search box is your friend, use it. Also, don’t be shy about bouncing around and looking at who’s following who.
  • Habit Two: Put it where you want it In it’s most basic form, Twitter is a webpage with a text box where you can enter a little message.
  • Habit One: Make the right friends
  • f you use Gmail and GoogleTalk, you can add twitter@twitter.com as a contact and get your stuff there.
  • you can add twitter@twitter.com as a contact in whatever IM software you use
  • you can just grab the RSS feed for all the folks that you’re following, or for individual users.
  • Habit Three: Own it
  • If you’re unafraid of spreading yourself around the web, be sure to claim your Twitter page with Technorati and expand your digital empire
  • Habit Four: Address your followers By default, when you send a note via Twitter it goes to everyone that’s following you.
  • Habit Five: Hack it People are doing interesting and innovative stuff with Twitter.
  • Use your skills to take your favorite RSS feed (or spliced feed) and HTTP POST (via API) to create a custom Twitter account that anyone can befriend.(
  • Check out this recent post over at Lifehack.org that covers “five ways to use Twitter for good.” I particularly like the ideas of friendsourcing and quick human answers. Also, various mashups of Twitter search results, RSS feeds and jedi tricks with stuff like Yahoo Pipes can result in some very interesting customized info streams. Check out Christopher S. Penn’s post on Twitter Power Tips.
  • Habit Six: Play with it Use the Firefox Search Plugin to post directly to your Twitter account (so cool)
  • Participate in the Twitter fan wiki (tons more tools in there)
  • Twitter “Everywhere, Anywhere Messaging”, Speed-dating…
  • You can add friends via IM, if you know their username by sending an IM to the twitter@twitter.com contact and typing: follow USERNAME

Help maintainers maintain. And helping contributors help the maintainers. | webschuur.com - 3 views

  • This morning I found an email in my inbox telling me that I am a bad maintainer and that I am making people fork my modules. The mail was not meant to go to me, but the sender hit reply and thought he was moaning about me to someone else. Basically I was asking for my modules to be forked because I was too ### to release a new version. I don’t release a version unless I am confident it is release-worthy: when I have used it myself. Not a big deal, but it gave me food for thought about maintainance and release of Drupal modules, in general. And about how to improve the general issue of not having enough time to dedicate to a contribution In general, I think there are three reasons to maintain a module on Drupal.org You think it is fun or/and like to “give something back” It allows you to have your module improved without having to invest much time and money It works as marketing for you, as a highly visible portfolio: people see you, see your work and therefore might hire your services.

John Battelle's Searchblog: round up - digg, microformats, google maps, Diigo, buzz machine - 0 views

  • Hi John, I use Diigo as a kind of information-management tool, and I see it's great novelty in keeping the connection between the information and its source. It's indeed the only tool available that lets me interact with the source itself - highlight text, add my notes on specific highlights, comment on the whole page, tag it for later, and share it with others. I also like it's search and viewing capabilities. About the social aspect - I notice that some people, while not great writers themselves, are very good in picking out the highlights from any given text and tagging it. You can easily notice that at delicious, digg and clipmarks. On a wider perspective, imagine that top thinkers, scientists and other inspirational people start to use Diigo, and share some of their I know I for one would like to follow what Noam Chomski and Kevin Kelly are reading and finding worthy. Bokardo » The Del.icio.us Lesson - 0 views

  • Personal Value Precedes Network Value The one major idea behind the Del.icio.us Lesson is that personal value precedes network value. What this means is that if we are to build networks of value, then each person on the network needs to find value for themselves before they can contribute value to the network. In the case of Del.icio.us, people find value saving their personal bookmarks first and foremost.
  • However, Del.icio.us tags aren’t like meta keyword tags because of the Del.icio.us Lesson. Meta keyword tags provide no personal value whatsoever. All of their value is social. They’re for aggregation engines to find and tell other people about. In other words, they’re for getting attention only. Del.icio.us tags, on the other hand, provide personal value each time someone uses them to recall a bookmark.
