I agree with it, basically, but what's got my attention right at the moment is the OpenSource version of Cynapse. It comes in two versions: one requires VMWare, and the other consists of source code, full stop. The system is admirable, but this roll out is not very attractive!

Yes indeed, that's the wicked problem. I don't know of any system that has really dealt with it ... best work is probably being done by the coders working on version control systems.
For my work I've simply done an end-run around that whole tangle. It wasn't easy short term (kind of like ignoring the elephant in the room) but it's no longer a problem for me.
