  • Tags help you find and organize your bookmarks by letting you select all of your bookmarks with a certain tag or combination of tags. Quickly add relevant tags to a bookmark by clicking on any of the recommended tags that appear under the description field on the “Save Bookmark” pop-up. When you are satisfied with the information in the “Save Bookmark” pop-up, click the “Save Bookmark” button. Now a link to the page is stored in your Diigo library, and the information you entered is stored with it.
  • Highlight Highlighting lets you denote important information on a page, just like highlighting in a book, but with Diigo, the highlighted text will be conveniently saved to your library as well. There are some important things for me to denote on my recipe. My wife doesn’t like pineapple, my grandfather can’t have eggs or chocolate, and I don’t like coconut very much, so I highlight those items on the recipe to let me know I need to deal with them. Highlight by clicking “Highlight” on the Diigolet. Then select the text you want to highlight. The text will be visually highlighted and the text is now stored in your library. It’s that easy. Click the button again to exit highlighter mode. You can also change the color of a highlight by clicking the downward-pointing arrow next to “Highlight” and choosing a color. Colors are useful for differentiating different types of highlights. I will use a different color for each of the different people I need to consider.
  • To add a sticky note to a highlight, simply move your mouse cursor over a highlight. When the little pop-up tab with the pencil on it appears, move the cursor to it and a menu will appear. Choose “Add Sticky Notes”. Now you can type and post a sticky note just like before, but this time it will be tied to the highlighted text.

Are we really collaborating? :: Blog :: Headshift - 0 views

  • simply because people work together to meet objectives and reach goals, doesn't mean they are collaborating
  • efficiency
  • 'Collaboration' thrives on difference, insight and spontaneity, rather than structural harmony
    • Graham Perrin

For me, this is thought-provoking. We're in a multi-institutional and in some ways displaced environment, in which - over a period of fifteen or so years - I have grown weary of choice/proliferation of ICT solutions. Certainly, 'more' and 'diverse' can be good - if the multiples work well with each other - but too often, we find incompatibilities. By coincidence, I have used the word 'harmony' a few times this week; considering past and present approaches to collaboration, greater harmony is *exactly* what I'm aiming for…
    • Graham Perrin

'Harmony of structure' is a fairly loose expression, open to interpretation.

Add to overuse: misuse, and blatant abuse. I can no longer treat e-mail as a reliable way of communicating. Whilst there is some necessity to read e-mail, I no longer feel any guilt if (amongst scores, hundreds or thousands of other messages) one or two important messages go un-read or ignored.

Too few people realise the worth of Diigo. Hence my pleas for refinement http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/annotated-urls-annotated-links-may-allow-public-anonymous-views-of-some-not-all-private-annotations-7168#3 and wider availability http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/diigolet-get-annotated-link-7124 of the 'Get Annotated Link' feature - excellent for displaying Diigo features to non-users.

    • Graham Perrin

Such a catchy, feel-good expression: 'more flexibility'. My problem with this: too often, 'more' is offered (or forced) upon us without proper consideration of whether - in the broadest sense - flexibility is genuinely *improved*.
  • providing workers with more
  • can result in new forms of cooperative action, more fruitful collaboration, faster decision-making, and greater productivity
    • Graham Perrin

Providing 'more' of something *might* result in what's described here, but there's a very real danger that if you add to much, people will not know where to start. Put simply, people switch off. I see it regularly

FRB: Highlights of Proposed Rules Regarding Credit Cards and Overdraft Services - 0 views

  •
Highlights of Proposed Rules Regarding Credit Cards and Overdraft Services Regulation AA (Unfair Acts or Practices) The proposal would amend Regulation AA to prohibit unfair or deceptive acts or practices by banks in connection with credit card accounts and overdraft services for deposit accounts. Credit Cards * Time to Make Payments. The proposal would prohibit banks from treating a payment as late unless the consumer has been provided a reasonable amount of time to make that payment. There would be a safe harbor for banks that send periodic statements at least 21 days prior to the payment due date. * Allocation of Payments. When different annual percentage rates (APRs) apply to different balances on a credit card account (for example, purchases and cash advances), banks would have to allocate payments exceeding the minimum payment using one of three methods or a method equally beneficial to consumers. They could not allocate the entire amount to the balance with the lowest rate. A bank could, for example, split the amount equally between two balances. In addition, to enable consumers to receive the full benefit of discounted promotional rates (for example, on balance transfers), during the promotional period payments in excess of the minimum would have to be allocated first to balances on which the rate is not discounted. * Applying Rate Increases to Existing Balances. The proposal would prohibit banks from increasing the interest rate on outstanding balances unless the increase is due to: (i) the operation of an index (in other words, the rate is a variable rate); (ii) the expiration or loss of a promotional rate (provided the rate is not increased to a penalty rate); or (iii) the minimum payment not being received within 30 days of the due date. * Two-Cycle Billing. The proposal would prohibit banks from imposing finance charges based on balances on days in billing cycles preceding the most recent billing cycle, a pra

Corporate Wikis reviewed: Confluence, JotSpot, WetPaint, Socialtext - 0 views

  • Corporate Wikis reviewed: Confluence, JotSpot, WetPaint, Socialtext by Troy Angrignon on Mon 10 Jul 2006 06:30 AM PDT  |  Permanent Link  |  Cosmos Wikis are on the rise in corporations. And it's about time. One of the principles of Web 2.0 is that your user community can generate content that is better, faster, and probably easier to read than you can as a vendor. One way to enable them to contribute would be to build a wiki and let them flesh it out. Some good examples are coming up in this article: "Corporate wikis breaking out all over: MSDN Wiki" by Dion Hinchcliffe. (He has another great post as well called "Exploiting the Power of Enterprise Wikis") Quote of the day: "Not leveraging the contributions of a company's most impassioned and enthusiastic customers is starting to be seen as a significand oversight in many business circles." It appears in the article that eBay is using Wikis to better communicate between their users, partners, and suppliers. Now MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) is using their pages to improve the quality of their developer documentation with the MSDN Wiki. THAT is a great usage. Your users often know your product better than your engineers and product managers because they have to live with it day to day. And guess what? If they tell the truth about some part of your product being broken - that's a GOOD thing.
  • Atlassian's Confluence is the best of them so far. Pros: the overall design is clean, it has advanced management tools, good security, and simple attachments. Its email function has to pick mail up from a POP box which makes it a little bit less ad-hoc but still functional. And most importantly, it also has great tools for moving pages around. Cons: Text editing, like with most apps these days is a bit dodgy, and pasting in blocks of text from Word is likely to cause problems. The pricing model is reasonable but for some reason (possibly because they're from Australia), they still don't have a directly hosted option so you have to use somebody like Contegix or deploy it on your own box. This seems to be a big and obvious oversight on their part these days. Also, their pricing model doesn't encourage small deployments right off the bat. I think this is the one that we'll use more of internally at the company where I work. Summary: The best of the enterprise wikis today, and one of the best options for scalability.
  • WetPaint is a newcomer that is doing some interesting stuff and that might be a better bet than JotSpot. Pros: The design is beautiful, the tool is very easy to use, the text editor is one of the best I have seen. Cons: I'm not clear on their entierprise suitability and it's not really their target market. It didn't appear that they had much in the way of administration tools, granular security, or any way to integrate into a back-end authentication system. Summary: I met one of the WetPaint guys at Gnomedex but he didn't seem to know the product very well. Hopefully next time, they'll put somebody more knowledgeable at their booth who knows the product in more detail. I think they're worth watching to see what they do in the next few months.

the feeling is always true no matter what makes we feel that way.
  • Metaphors become real when we act as if they are real – whether or not we intellectually "believe" they are real.
  • But is simulated sex real? Is the metaphoric rape of one artificial avatar by another avatar in a virtual world, virtual or real? Is it a real assault, a real crime? This was the famous question posed by a real legal case about an online game.
  • We are heading into a domain where we create things "as if" they are something else, in imitation of them. Then we improve and deepen the fake with layers of more "as if" until it actually become something else.  Our creations go from "as if" to "is."
  • eliciting real behavior from the metaphor.
  • "If you respond as if it were real, then it is Presence."
  • adding more layers of meaning and realism, until metaphor slowly passes whatever invisible barrier lies between the real and fake
  • see human society as the dominant superorganism on the planet, consuming resources and growing.
  • the world looks "as if" it has a global brain.
  • We currently view it as "our" brain, our collective brain, and that is how we act towards it
  • One of the ways we will know when a thing has passed from "as-if to is" is when it earns unalloyed love from humans.
