  • My days with technology do NOT all run smoothly. Sometimes there are many stops and starts. This is especially true at the beginning of the school year as my six year olds become familiar with the tools and apps we will use to learn and share what we know. Bandwidth can be an issue in my school, and access has often been as well. Sometimes a tool that I rely on will not work for some reason or other.

  • One of the few classes that effectively taught me how to take information from the classroom to the real world was instructed by Doug Wightman at Queen’s University. The course covered concepts from how to start a start-up, build business models and prototypes, to venture deals, stock options and term sheets. But it didn’t end there. Toward the end of the course, many students had working prototypes, and a few managed to execute and launch their ideas. This course taught me something important: We can’t allow learning to become passive. We need to teach students to learn how to learn – to become independent, innovative thinkers capable of changing the world.

      Besides just doing away with grades, how can we actually convince students that failure is part of the process? As much as we tell them that it's about challenging themselves, when it all boils down to it, at the end of the grading period we still have to put a number on their report card. So hard to reconcile!

  • In my mind, a solid 4 rating means that your adult professional embraces feedback, both formal and informal and has strong systems and processes in place that encourage feedback - things like annual faculty,  parent, and board surveys, intentionally designed evaluation processes for students, faculty, staff and leadership that happen at minimum annually, but even better quarterly, regular audits of programs, curriculum, pedagogy, time and space.  Other good signs that your culture supports feedback might be meetings that end with questions like, "How are we working together as a team/department?" and "What can we do to get better at this work?"  and school leaders who ask their reports with genuine curiosity,  "What can I do to better support your work?"  "What do you think about this idea?" or "How did this meeting go for you?"

Ask them questions about their classes.  See how many times you hear someone ask questions like: "What do you think about this?"  "Will you come by my class and let me know what you think about this lesson I am teaching?"  "How can I/we do this better?"  Attend meetings with this question in mind.  How receptive are team members to feedback they get in meetings?

  • You cannot simply swap out the word, “problem” with “opportunity”; your thinking has to shift that way.  For example, a subtle change in the question, “When am I going to have time to do this?”, to, “How would I work this into my day in a meaningful way?”, changes the way we frame what is in front of us.  One question is looking for ways things won’t work, and the other is trying to find a way.

    I love the power of making subtle changes in our language. I am going to take this quote and post it in my office- so good to remember going forward. I've been trying to encourage my students (and my own children) to change from saying "have to" to "get" to help them see the opportunity in their everyday actions. While not always successful, it can have a profound effect on the way they see things.
