How to Build an App Like Alexa? - 0 views

  •
The future is here with voice and natural language serve up. This is an important step in marking the service of our digital systems to us, and we have begun from the age of landlines. We have slowly evolved to touch-based palm-sized phones and computers, and now we have Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, Microsoft's Cortana, and Google Assistant. For the purpose of building voice and natural language capabilities into your own applications, one has to depend on cloud options. But if you are wondering why limit yourself only to Amazon or Apple, and create your own, you are on the right track. Anyone can build their system and enable the voice with multiple devices. It is only the difference of speech to text, followed by a query parser, a pipeline, a rules engine, and of course a pluggable architecture with mandatory open APIs.

Keeeb, The Free Next Generation Knowledge Management System for Everyone - 0 views

  •
Bookmarking services are a dime a dozen. So, I wasn't too keen on checking out yet another iteration by the name of Keeeb. But, and I honestly mean it, I'm glad I did. Keeeb is not simply a social bookmarking service, it is a knowledge management system and it levels up the quality of my research on longer and more complicated articles easily. I am both an avid user of Pocket and Evernote Premium, yet Keeeb still closes a gap I didn't even know existed. Let's take a closer look, shall we?!

The 7 Software "-ilities" You Need To Know - 0 views

  • 1. Usability Software usability can be described as how effectively end users can use, learn, or control the system
  • 2. Maintainability ( or Flexibility / Testibility) The definition of maintainability [for me] implies how brittle the code is to change
  • 3. Scalability Scalability is the ability for your program to gracefully meet the demand of stress caused by increased usage
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • 4. Availability (or Reliability) How long the system is up and running and the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) is known as the availability of a program
  • 5. Extensibility Are there points in the system where changes can be made with (or without) program changes?
  • 6. Security I shouldn’t need to go into this one but to be thorough I like this definition of security: the measure of system’s ability to resist unauthorized attempts at usage or behavior modification, while still providing service to legitimate users.
  • 7. Portability Portability is the ability for your application to run on numerous platforms.

Wal*Mart shutting down DRM server, nuking your music collection - Boing Boing - 0 views

Is it just me, or does this say: we strongly recommend you circumvent the DRM system if you want to keep your music!
  •
This is why any encryption system which depends on phoning home should not be an option when you're considering where to spend your money. Buy CDs, or DRM-Free tracks (which is all that Wal-Mart sells, now).

Joe Duffy's Weblog - OnBeingStateful - 0 views

  • The biggest question left unanswered in my mind is the role state will play in software of the future.
  • The biggest question left unanswered in my mind is the role state will play in software of the future. That seems like an absurd statement, or a naïve one at the very least.  State is everywhere: The values held in memory. Data locally on disk. Data in-flight that is being sent over a network. Data stored in the cloud, including on a database, remote filesystem, etc. Certainly all of these kinds of state will continue to exist far into the future.  Data is king, and is one major factor that will drive the shift to parallel computing.  The question then is how will concurrent programs interact with this state, read and mutate it, and what isolation and synchronization mechanisms are necessary to do so?
  • Many programs have ample gratuitous dependencies, simply because of the habits we’ve grown accustomed to over 30 odd years of imperative programming.  Our education, mental models, books, best-of-breed algorithms, libraries, and languages all push us in this direction.  We like to scribble intermediary state into shared variables because it’s simple to do so and because it maps to our von Neumann model of how the computer works.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • We need to get rid of these gratuitous dependencies.  Merely papering over them with a transaction—making them “safe”—doesn’t do anything to improve the natural parallelism that a program contains.  It just ensures it doesn’t crash.  Sure, that’s plenty important, but providing programming models and patterns to eliminate the gratuitous dependencies also achieves the goal of not crashing but with the added benefit of actually improving scalability too.  Transactions have worked so well in enabling automatic parallelism in databases because the basic model itself (without transactions) already implies natural isolation among queries.  Transactions break down and scalability suffers for programs that aren’t architected in this way.  We should learn from the experience of the database community in this regard
  • There will always be hidden mutation of shared state inside lower level system components.  These are often called “benevolent side-effects,” thanks to Hoare, and apply to things like lazy initialization and memorization caches.  These will be done by concurrency ninjas who understand locks.  And their effects will be isolated by convention.
  • Even with all of this support, we’d be left with an ecosystem of libraries like the .NET Framework itself which have been built atop a fundamentally mutable and imperative system.  The path forward here is less clear to me, although having the ability to retain a mutable model within pockets of guaranteed isolation certainly makes me think the libraries are salvageable.  Thankfully, the shift will likely be very gradual, and the pieces that pose substantial problems can be rewritten in place incrementally over time.  But we need the fundamental language and type system support first.

Dr. Dobb's Update : Editor's Note What's One More Operating System, More or Less? - 0 views

  • In this regard, SymbianOS may have a leg up on Apple's App Store and even Nokia's Ovi Store, in that the "Symbian Application Inventory" will be free for developers. That's what you call "incentive," but is it enough?
    • David Corking

Before it attracts app developers, it has to attract hardware integrators. There is plenty of hardware out there, but isn't this selling in far lower volumes than Linux or the proprietary smartphone OSes. As far as I can tell, it has attention from the biggest smartphone integrator of them all: Nokia, who, as far as I can tell, uses it in the best selling N95 family. This ratchets up the competion with Apple and RIM another notch.
  •
This Symbian system (aka Psion and Nokia S60) was well loved for its well though out personal organizer or PIM applications. Now, smartphone users seems more interested in e-mail, music and games. I am interested to see if Symbian OS still has a profitable niche. Symbian is a market leader in the new market.
