  • Not all operators are symbols. Some are written as words. One example is the typeof operator, which produces a string value naming the type of the value you give it.

  • The difference in meaning between undefined and null is an accident of JavaScript’s design, and it doesn’t matter most of the time. In the cases where you actually have to concern yourself with these values, I recommend treating them as interchangeable (more on that in a moment).

  • This functionality allows the || operator to be used as a way to fall back on a default value. If you give it an expression that might produce an empty value on the left, the value on the right will be used as a replacement in that case.
  • The && operator works similarly, but the other way around. When the value to its left is something that converts to false, it returns that value, and otherwise it returns the value on its right.
  • Another important property of these two operators is that the expression to their right is evaluated only when necessary.   • Interesting comment about IntelliSense encouraging a bottom-up approach. I think that is true if you start with programming and not with design. What I mean by that is that some people create their design in code rather than working out the full design before starting to code. I think that if you create a design using a top down approach it takes longer to get to the building blocks. that is frustrating to many, especially students, but in the long run results in a much better design. With a complete design in place one does know what the little blocks of code will be at least from the standpoint of names and interfaces. Creating those little blocks early on in the programming is fine as long as the design is complete

    Very good read (particularly their evaluation of weaving methods).

    Although as a result their "Policy Injection" application block isn't as powerful as most of the straight-up AOP toolkits out there, it does have a *huge* upside: not only is the code produced by this supportable by Microsoft Product Support, it's now officially part of the Patterns and Practices recommendations!

    The down side is that the only injectable objects are ones created through a "Factory" method (you can't just use the *new* constructor) this brings some performance hits ... but then, you get the ability to separate concerns and apply policies and even business rules after the fact!

      Before it attracts app developers, it has to attract hardware integrators. There is plenty of hardware out there, but isn't this selling in far lower volumes than Linux or the proprietary smartphone OSes. As far as I can tell, it has attention from the biggest smartphone integrator of them all: Nokia, who, as far as I can tell, uses it in the best selling N95 family. This ratchets up the competion with Apple and RIM another notch.

    This Symbian system (aka Psion and Nokia S60) was well loved for its well though out personal organizer or PIM applications. Now, smartphone users seems more interested in e-mail, music and games. I am interested to see if Symbian OS still has a profitable niche. Symbian is a market leader in the new market.

      Will have to tweak the build by hand. This will no doubt be fixed before Chromium Linux goes to beta, but right now it is a disappointment, as the reported added speed of Chromium may be more valuable on older machines.
