  • ただ残念ながら、この“クラウド”も、現時点ではまだ実用的ではない。グリッド・コンピューティングやSaaS（Software as a Service）、アプリケーション・デリバリの管理、グローバル規模でのアクセスなど、ほとんどの技術がまだ幼年期にあるからだ。シン・クライアント型アプリケーションも、初期のWebがそうであったように、まだ先行き不透明な荒削りの欠陥製品にすぎない。 　ただ、そうした限界はあっても、Googleはサーバや特殊なインフラを導入することなく、データを簡単に共有できるホステッド・モデルの強みを生かして全力を尽くさなければならない。Microsoftはすでに（パスワードでプロテクトをかけたSharePointのワークスペースにすぎないとはいえ）Web経由でドキュメントを共有できる「Office Live Workspace」（画面1）のベータ版をリリースし、クラウド・コンピューティングのトレンドセッターのポジションを奪い取る姿勢を見せているからだ。（もちろん、Office Liveという名称にもかかわらず、Officeの全機能を提供しているわけではないので、今のところそれほど脅威ではない）。

  • 　Googleはまず、現行のサービスを強化すべきである。なかでもWebアプリケーションのオフライン時利用の実現は、Google Gearsイニシアチブでようやく解決に向けて動き出した重要な技術的課題であり、この機能を「Documents」や「Spreadsheets」、「Presentations」の各アプリケーションに早急に拡張する必要がある。ところが同社は、先ごろ打ち出したオープンソースの携帯電話向けアプリケーション開発プラットフォーム「Android」プロジェクトによって、Google Appsへの熱意が冷めてしまった感がある。Googleの経営陣は、今一度Microsoft追撃に集中し、やみくもに戦線を拡大しないよう気を引き締める必要があるだろう。高いROI（投資利益率）が見込めない無数のサイド・プロジェクトに埋もれ、身動きが取れなくなる愚だけは避けなければならない。
