旧版Office for Mac向けのOpen XMLファイル・コンバータがようやくリリース

米Microsoftは米国時間2008年6月24日に，Open XML形式のOfficeドキュメントを初期バージョンの「Office for Mac」で扱えるようにするコンバータ「Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0」をリリースした。同社のWebサイトからダウンロードできる。 　「Office 2008 for Mac」あるいは「Office 2007 for Windows」で作成したWord文書，Excelワークブック，PowerPointプレゼンテーションなどのファイルを，「Office 2004 for Mac」や「Office v. X for Mac」で開いて編集することが可能。 　米メディアの報道（CNET News.com）によると，コンバータは当初，Office 2007のリリースに近い日程で提供する予定だった。 　2007年5月にベータ版をリリースし，その時点では最終版を「Office 2008 for Macの発売から6～8週間後」としていたが（関連記事：MicrosoftがMacユーザー向けにOffice Open XMLファイルのコンバータを公開），延期が重なっていた。

その好例がMicrosoft Officeだ。これほど広く普及しているにもかかわらず、ほとんどの人は「Word」「Excel」「PowerPoint」といったスタンドアロン・アプリケーションの単なる詰め合わせと考えている。しかし、Officeは、そうした単純なスイート製品にとどまらない。Officeは統合化された堅牢なAPI（VBA、OLEオートメーション、その他のアドイン・インタフェース）のおかげで、それ自体が商用ソフトウェア開発の有力なターゲットになっている。事実、Windows開発市場に参入する最も簡単な方法は、Microsoft Officeをターゲットにすることである。このスイートの機能を新しくしたり、強化したりするすぐれた製品を開発すれば、世界中の人々が売り場に殺到するだろう。

こうしたMicrosoftの相互補強戦略を崩壊させうる1つの力がWebである。ブラウザ・ベースのシン・クライアントとユビキタスな接続性の組み合わせは、Microsoftの支配力を奪いつつある。しかし同社は、愚鈍そうに見えて、実はこの脅威に敏感に反応しており、ここでも有効性が実証済みの囲い込みと拡張の戦略を推し進めている。いわばゆっくりとした足取りで、足早に逃げ回る獲物を追い詰めているわけだ。 　まずは囲い込みだ。Googleや新興勢力のZoho（画面3）などの成功を見たMicrosoftは、写真共有やブログ・ツールといったコンシューマー向けのWindows Liveサービスや、契約管理、Webサイト設計といった中小企業向けのシン・クライアント型Office Liveサービスなどを投入して、積極的に反撃している。

次に拡張だ。例によって、Microsoftは伝統的なデスクトップOSやアプリケーション・プラットフォームに新しいサービスを組み込み、Office LiveとWindows Liveサービスを拡張している。前述したOffice Live Workspacesや、「Windows Live Mail」（画面4）、「Windows Live Writer」（画面5）などは、どれも成長著しいLiveアプリケーション市場をターゲットとしたものだ。いずれもWindows仕様であり、Webとデスクトップの統合を実現する独自のハイブリッド・アーキテクチャを採用している。 　さらにMicrosoftは、近い将来、アプリケーション仮想化を通してWord、Excel、PowerPointの全機能をシン・クライアントで提供し、ユビキタスな接続性を実現したいと考えており、高性能ファット・クライアントに残された他のアプリケーションについても、ストリーミング・サーバの大規模分散ネットワークでサポートしていく姿勢を見せている。 　こうしたアプローチは非常に魅力的だ。Microsoftの最新のアプリケーションが低コスト、あるいはほとんどコスト・ゼロでデスクトップに配信されるようになれば、わざわざAjax（Asynchronous JavaScript＋XML）アプリケーションを我慢して使う理由がなくなる。それはGoogleに困難な課題を突きつけるはずだ。

ただ残念ながら、この“クラウド”も、現時点ではまだ実用的ではない。グリッド・コンピューティングやSaaS（Software as a Service）、アプリケーション・デリバリの管理、グローバル規模でのアクセスなど、ほとんどの技術がまだ幼年期にあるからだ。シン・クライアント型アプリケーションも、初期のWebがそうであったように、まだ先行き不透明な荒削りの欠陥製品にすぎない。 　ただ、そうした限界はあっても、Googleはサーバや特殊なインフラを導入することなく、データを簡単に共有できるホステッド・モデルの強みを生かして全力を尽くさなければならない。Microsoftはすでに（パスワードでプロテクトをかけたSharePointのワークスペースにすぎないとはいえ）Web経由でドキュメントを共有できる「Office Live Workspace」（画面1）のベータ版をリリースし、クラウド・コンピューティングのトレンドセッターのポジションを奪い取る姿勢を見せているからだ。（もちろん、Office Liveという名称にもかかわらず、Officeの全機能を提供しているわけではないので、今のところそれほど脅威ではない）。

おそらくGoogleの究極の競合は、ユーザーが長年慣れ親しむWindowsとOfficeを組み合わせた環境の快適さと、ホスティング型アプリケーションのアドバンテージを融合したハイブリッド・モデルになるだろう。それこそがまさにMicrosoftの目指す方向なのだが、皮肉なことに、Windows Vistaと「2007 Microsoft Office system（Office 2007）」の大幅なインタフェース刷新、ならびにOffice 2007の不安定性に対する不満が、IT部門のMicrosoft製品離れを引き起こしており、Googleに絶好のチャンスをもたらしている。

しかしGoogleは今、大きなプレッシャーに直面している。企業向けホスティング型アプリケーション・スイートの「Google Apps」をはじめ、オフライン対応のWebアプリケーション開発／実行環境「Google Gears」（画面2）への期待は大きいものの、実際のところ、どれをとっても不十分なものばかりであるからだ。唯一「Gmail」だけは例外と言えるが、全体的に見れば、現行のデスクトップ・アプリケーションと比較して遜色がないと言い切れるものはない。実際、まちがってF5キーを打ってしまっただけで、時間をかけた労作がいとも簡単に消えてしまうなど、ビジネスで本格的に利用できるレベルにはまだ達していない（こうした欠陥は改善されつつあるが、Google Appsの未成熟さがいかんともし難いのは事実だ）。

Zoho Plug-In for MS OfficeThe "Zoho Plug-in for Microsoft Office" bridges the gap between online and offline office productivity. As with all other windows application, the file name 'zohoplugin.exe' will be saved to your preferred location on your local machine. Installation is pretty simple, please remember to close all your MS Office applications before you install this plug-in. After the initial check is over, double click on the 'zohoplugin.exe' file to begin the installation process. A picture they say is worth a thousand words and with all them arranged in a slide show using Zoho Show is certainly worth a million.

the 4th Amendment was developed at a time when the only privacy was spatial privacy; for something to be private, I had to keep it IN my home or office (and maybe in a locked chest), which both made it difficult for law enforcement officers to gain access to it and symbolically invoked my right to assume they wouldn’t gain access to it. (In other words, I could assume privacy.)

our lives have already moved far beyond spatial privacy; I talked about the 4th Amendment’s application to the contents of emails and what we do online -- arguing that it should apply to both, but noting that courts so far do not tend to agree. I think cloud computing will take this analysis to the next level.

My point is that even under current 4th Amendment law, I can make what I think are valid arguments as to why the 4th Amendment should apply to data stored in a cloud (as long as the appropriate conditions exist). I really think, though, that we shouldn’t be using cases that were decided thirty years ago or a hundred and thirty years ago to set the standard for 4th Amendment privacy in an era of advancing technology. As I argued in that law review article, I think we need to move beyond a purely spatial approach to privacy to approaches that encompass both spatial and non-spatial privacy.
