In earlier times, schools could foist these instructors on students, who’d be stuck for a semester. This no longer happens, because RateMyProfessors.com effectively warns students away from the poor-quality teachers.

This entire range of possibilities can be accommodated without much of the infrastructure we presently associate with educational institutions.
