Mallika Dutt was born in India, a place where women are relegated next to men in the social hierarchy. Seeing the violence around her had Mallika pursuing a career in social justice. She became a lawyer and worked for various organizations. Upon realizing that social media and the arts can profoundly influence people and move them into action, she established her own organization in 2000. Since then, Breakthrough has been "breaking" barriers and shifting paradigms towards a more liberal society. Mallika has proven that women has the power to change the world for the better. In partnership with Elluminate, we are in the process of organizing a free virtual online global education conference to hopefully take place November 15 - 19, 2010. Our conference strands are *tentatively* set to include: Teachers (professional development, training, etc.), Students (student-led initiatives, exchange programs, service learning etc.), Pedagogy (curriculum, digital citizenship, assessment etc. ), Policy and Leadership (exemplary schools, ICT infrastructure, government initiatives etc.), and Change (peace and social justice, equity, etc.).

The role that education plays in issues of social equity and justice cannot be undervalued. It is acknowledged by the United Nations as a human right, 'Everyone has the right to education' (United Nations, 1948) and as outlined in the Melbourne Declaration on the Educational Goals for Young Australians 'As a nation Australia values the central role of education in building a democratic, equitable and just society- a society that is prosperous, cohesive and culturally diverse, and that values Australia's Indigenous cultures as a key part of the nation's history, present and future.' (Barr et al, 2008). Such lofty assertions of the importance of education as a right and national value should be sufficient to ensure that all Australians have access to an education of the highest standard with equitable outcomes for all, the reality is that this is not the case.
