EMI is an international scientific organization started in 1998 and established as a non-stock, non-profit organization in the Philippines in 2003. Its mission is to advance policy, knowledge and practice of urban Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
In 2005, EMI was accredited by UNDP as an Implementing Agency for the UNDP/BCPR urban disaster risk reduction program. At the same time, the organization also became a part of the U.N. Task Force for Disaster Reduction. Since 2007, EMI has been a member of the UN Global Platform for Disaster Reduction (GPDRR)
The EWEM program encompasses a broad spectrum of scientific endeavors operating at national, regional , and international scales. EWEM project activities support investigations in the areas of climate change, natural resource management, environmental change detection, food security monitoring, water resource assessments, and hazard identification/mitigation
