NASA's New Asteroid Mission Could Save the Planet - Yahoo! News - 1 views

  • President Barack Obama set a lofty next goal this week for Americans in space: Visiting an asteroid by 2025.
  • But reaching a space rock in a mere 15 years is a daunting mission, and one that might also carry the ultimate safety of the planet on its shoulders.
  • And there's another compelling reason for touching an asteroid: Saving the planet.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Scientists estimate there are about 100,000 asteroids and comets near Earth, but only about 20,000 are expected to pose any risk of impact.
  • 1,000 of them flying in orbits that could potentially threaten the Earth in the future, NASA scientists have said.
  • "By 2025, we expect new spacecraft designed for long journeys to allow us to begin the first-ever crewed missions beyond the moon into deep space," Obama said. "We'll start we'll start by sending astronauts to an asteroid for the first time in history."
  • "Robots have never discovered things," Grunsfeld said. "People have discovered things, using robots."

Hawking: Aliens may pose risks to Earth - Space- - 2 views

  • "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet,"
  • The 68-year-old scientist said a visit by extraterrestrials to Earth might well be like Christopher Columbus arriving in the Americas, "which didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans."
  • Hawking said an attack by interstellar predators is just one of the dismaying possibilities in the search for intelligent life beyond Earth. Another possibility is that intelligence itself might be inimical to life. Hawking pointed out that humanity has put itself on the edge of its own destruction by creating nuclear bombs and other weapons of mass destruction.

  • The Republican Party of Florida has told its members that they will be forbidden from supporting Gov. Charlie Crist if he decides to run as an independent.
    • Sarah Coley
I read about this in the St. Pete Times this morning, and I found this troubling. The Florida Republican Party, according to their bylaws, forbids any members (ie, those who hold any form of office, including small positions like precinct committee members) from supporting any non-Republican candidate financially or publically. If a candidate switches political affiliations during the campaign (possibly in Crist's case), the Republicans must ask for their former donations to be returned. If any Florida Republican leaders don't comply, their offices can be revoked. I found this troubling, because I think it is somewhat unconstitutional. I can maybe understand not publically supporting a non-party candidate, but I think they have no right to dictate whether someone can financially contribute to a different candiate.

I really hope that this doesn't affect his music in a negative fashion. His style of living is to simply eat, sleep and breathe music. He records all his lyrics without ever writing them down, so his natural flow might be hurt, but he might be able to reflect and continue what he does in prison, or at least I hope so.

EBSCOhost: Sleep paralysis-associated sensed presence as a possible manifestation of s... - 1 views

      Sleep Paralysis vs. Anxiety Disorders
  • Sleep paralysis and hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations (HHs) are components of the narcoleptic tetrad of symptoms, together with excessive daytime sleepiness and attacks of cataplexy
  • Sleep paralysis manifests as an inability to speak or to move the trunk, limbs, and/or facial muscles while remaining aware of one's surroundings.
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • The phenomenon arises just prior to falling asleep or on awakening (ASDA, 1990; Takeuchi, Fukuda, Sasaki, Inugami, & Murphy, 2002) and is often accompanied by hypnagogic (sleep-onset) or hypnopompic (sleep-offset) hallucinations. Sleep paralysis can also affect individuals without excessive daytime sleepiness or cataplexy—that is, without a diagnosis of narcolepsy—and is referred to in those cases as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP; ASDA, 1990; Fukuda, 1994; Hishikawa & Shimizu, 1995; Takeuchi, Miyasita, Sasaki, Inugami, & Fukuda, 1992)
  • HHs to be vivid auditory, tactile, or kinesthetic images most often associated with fear, terror, or dread.
  • PRES occurring with ISP tends to be associated with fear as well as with visual and, less often, auditory hallucinations; together, these components constitute a particular type of HH referred to as the “intruder” (Cheyne, 2001; Cheyne, Rueffer, & Newby-Clark, 1999).
  • The hallucinated presence, in turn, triggers intense fear, which leads to a brief search for signs of danger to corroborate the feeling of presence.
  • Apart from some work assessing panic disorder among African American samples, few studies have systematically investigated possible links between anxiety and ISP (with associated HHs).
  • An early study by Bell et al. (1986) revealed that 15.5% of subjects with ISP also had panic disorder. However, only 25 subjects participated in this study, and no controls were assessed.
  • Another study revealed that 7 out of 18 African Americans diagnosed with panic disorder and hypertension also had ISP (Neal, Rich, & Smucker, 1994). Unfortunately, the prevalence of ISP among hypertensives without panic disorder was not assessed.
  • The fact that PRES is the most prevalent form of HH and is frequently associated with fear is consistent with the possibility that the individual experiencing it may be frightened by the presence of others in a more general sense. In this respect, ISP with PRES shares many commonalities with social anxiety, which is a marked and persistent fear of social situations involving unfamiliar people or scrutiny by others
  • Third, evidence from neurobiology supports a hypothesized link between the HHs accompanying ISP and social anxiety. A recent study using the positron emission tomography technique found an overactivation of the amygdala among socially anxious subjects while they spoke in public (Tillfors et al., 2001). Consistent with this, it has been proposed that intruder hallucinations might be associated with increased activity in the amygdala (Cheyne, 2001; Cheyne, Rueffer, & Newby-Clark, 1999).
  • Fear, visual imagery, and PRES might constitute a constellation of cognitive-emotional processes also common to socially anxious individuals.
  • “the presence is watching or monitoring the subject.”

In the aftermath of an attack, Bloomingdale library rape victim finds her angels - St. ... - 1 views

A companion during recovery: sober companions can help clients transitioning to and fro... - 3 views

  • The standard 28-day primary treatment program is sufficient for clients entering the recovery process; however, research shows statistically higher success rates for clients who spend additional time in a structured step-down program, such as an extended-care residential facility or 3/4- or 1/2-way transitional house
  • Many clients who have shown positive progress and a sincere desire to remain clean and sober while in treatment have relapsed on the trip home or during the first few days out of treatment.
    • Eva Angelini
The changes a person may experience during treatment might be deeply personal and intense. Considering most treatment settings are probably based in relaxing, safe surroundings, it is not a surprise to me that someone would find themselves struggling as early as the flight back home. I think this is probably common due to the nature of the raw realities a person might face upon leaving treatment in recovery. Lifestyle changes can be pivotal & positive experiences, although, I'm sure they can also be challenging, and quickly regressive if a solid transitional plan is not intact and followed.

First moonwalker blasts Obama's space plan - Space- - 0 views

  • The first man to walk on the moon blasted President Barack Obama’s decision to cancel NASA’s back-to-the-moon program on Tuesday, saying that the move is “devastating” to America’s space effort.
  • The most controversial part of the president's policy is the cancellation of the Constellation program, which was aimed at developing a new generation of Ares rockets and Orion spacecraft to send astronauts into Earth orbit and beyond.
  • Obama administration determined that the Constellation program could not fulfill NASA's goals on the required timetable.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • The letter notes that the U.S. space effort will be dependent for years to come on the Russians for transport to the International Space Station, at a cost of more than $50 million per seat.
  • Armstrong and his colleagues complained that the cancellation would amount to wasting the roughly $10 billion that has been allocated to Constellation over the past five years.
  • "America must decide if it wishes to remain a leader in space," the astronauts said. "If it does, we should institute a program which will give us the very best chance of achieving that goal.

  • The fact that Armstrong, arguably the world's most famous living astronaut, has now spoken out against NASA's change of plans is likely to focus additional attention on the debate over America's future in space.
  • On the other side of the debate, the most outspoken Apollo-era advocate of NASA's new policy is the man who was Armstrong's co-pilot for the first moon landing: Buzz Aldrin.

i find this interesting how the first two men on the moon, co-pilots, respond with such dichotomy when considering this topic.

President Obama has another opportunity to appoint a justice to the supreme court now that Justice Stevens is retiring. President Obama appointed Sonia Sotomayor who was the first Latina ever to be a justice. These justice choices are important because the Supreme Court decides some of the most controversial cases in the United States.
