Seth's Blog » Blog Archive » Tyler Cowen's Unusual Final Exam - 1 views

  • “Here is the exam. Write your own questions. Write your own answers. Harder questions and better answers get more points.”
  • “Write a question you wish had been in this exam, and answer it”. As I recall some students didn’t appreciate that opportunity as much as I did.
  • One result of this strategy is that every student will be correct in their prediction of what will be on the exam. Regardless of which material is actually most important

Next Time, Fail Better - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education - 1 views

  • "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."
  • When a program runs and produces a good result, it's perfect. It's awfully hard to define success the same way in the humanities. What we do, teaching or writing, can always be better. The program will never simply run.

Seth's Blog: What do you do when they don't understand? - 2 views

  • No one is going to read the whole thing, ever again. But we need to make it much easier to read the part of the thing that someone really cares about.

Seth's Blog: The new lazy journalism - 1 views

  • The hard part of professional journalism going forward is writing about what hasn't been written about, directing attention where it hasn't been, and saying something new.
  •
The great challenge for journalists is also the challenge for educators. We do need to look for the new ways to learn and share and reach each of our students. We cannot afford to teach the same old stuff in the same old way and expect that to be sufficient for our new students in this new time. Thanks to Bo A. for the lead to this article.

Is there enough focus on teacher collaboration? - 0 views

  •
Do we care enough about allowing time for teachers to collaborate in schools? Granted the emphasis is on teaching students. I get that, but what about the need for teachers to share, exchange, grow in their work, etc. That is harder to accomplish in isolation.

This goes back to the discussion of creating PLNs and PLNCs. Richard Byrne gave a good presentation on this a while back (http://www.slideshare.net/rbyrnetech/constructing-a-pln-3465767). Robert Jacobs' blog - Education Innovation - has been writing on this topic for years. I still refer back to this 2009 article from time to time. http://educationinnovation.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/07/welcome-to-the-revolution-the-professional-networked-learning-collaborative.html

Look at this article on Edutopia's website that we written by Linda Darling Hammond and Brigid Barron on the merits of PBL. Really good piece that is quoted by many other people writing in this field.
