High-stakes testing cheats children out of a quality education | Get Schooled - 0 views

  • “The more any quantitative social indicator is used for social decision-making, the more subject it will be to corruption pressures and the more apt it will be to distort and corrupt the social processes it is intended to monitor.”
  • “[W]hen test scores become the goal of the teaching process, they both lose their value as indicators of educational status and distort the educational process in undesirable ways.”
  • New requirements to assess teachers based on their students’ scores, in particular, virtually guarantee even more cheating will take place.

The 100-Year March of Technology in 1 Graph - Derek Thompson - Technology - The Atlantic - 3 views

  •
I don't know all the places this could be used, but the graph in this article contains a STUNNING amount of information. I think the math is obvious, but I envision some phenomenal social science lessons, technology insights, the evolution of science, the implied connections to the ability of societies to spread information, the differences in cost of the various innovations and why that matters .... Hope you find something cool.

  • “I love the fact that wether [sic] we like it or not, or better put ‘wether [sic] we know it or not’, we are a part of an international, interemotional and integrating system. But who is studying everyone [sic]? That’s the beauty. We are not being studied by anyone, but we are studying ourselves. It is an amazing system of theories and use.”

Seth's Blog: The new lazy journalism - 1 views

  • The hard part of professional journalism going forward is writing about what hasn't been written about, directing attention where it hasn't been, and saying something new.
  •
The great challenge for journalists is also the challenge for educators. We do need to look for the new ways to learn and share and reach each of our students. We cannot afford to teach the same old stuff in the same old way and expect that to be sufficient for our new students in this new time. Thanks to Bo A. for the lead to this article.

This site has more resources than just Internet Safety or Cyber Bullying. The parent section is an excellent reference, as are the "homework helpers." To find the latter, search for "homework" in the search area, as they are not readily available. The weekly e-Newsletter is also a great resource, particularly for the parents and teachers of elementary/middle school aged students.
