Some responses to replies to my posts on curriculum reform « Granted, but… - 2 views

  • The goal is always to emulate best practice.
  • The content does not determine the flow, the goals of meaning and transfer do. But content matters; it can’t just be projects. It takes artful design.

On assessing for creativity: yes you can, and yes you should « Granted, but… - 1 views

  • Educators sometimes say that they shy from assessing creative thought for fear of inhibiting students, but this is a grave error in my view,
  • I once saw a class at Portland HS in Maine where the student oral presentations were unbelievably good, across the board, with “average” kids. How did you do it, I asked the teacher?

Is there enough focus on teacher collaboration? - 0 views

Do we care enough about allowing time for teachers to collaborate in schools? Granted the emphasis is on teaching students. I get that, but what about the need for teachers to share, exchange, grow in their work, etc. That is harder to accomplish in isolation.

This goes back to the discussion of creating PLNs and PLNCs. Richard Byrne gave a good presentation on this a while back (http://www.slideshare.net/rbyrnetech/constructing-a-pln-3465767). Robert Jacobs' blog - Education Innovation - has been writing on this topic for years. I still refer back to this 2009 article from time to time. http://educationinnovation.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/07/welcome-to-the-revolution-the-professional-networked-learning-collaborative.html

Seems to me that you should report on these findings to the Administrative Team in the very near future. Bob

Last year's report and conversation around the need for affinity group dialogue with the administrative team included statistics and plenty of personal and national stories pointing to the importance of addressing race/culture and learning, particularly as it relates to a discussion around whiteness and the culture of "niceness" within our schools. This article is 8 years old and not much has changed at many schools. Thanks for reading it! Please pass along to your team colleagues if you can?

Why is the change in this area so slow?
