Stripgenerator.com - Comic Creating Community - 2 views

  •
Strip Generator allows anyone, even people who claim they can't draw, to create a good-looking black and white comic strip. To create a comic strip all you need to do is select the number of frames you want then drag characters and objects into those frames. The menus for characters and objects are fairly extensive. Once you've selected a character or object you can adjust the size to fit your scene. Adding text is a simple matter of selecting a speech bubble and typing text. When you're happy with your comic strip you can save it online, print it, or embed it into your blog.

2009 Horizon Report: The K12 Edition » Technologies to Watch - 0 views

shared by anonymous on 28 Apr 09 - Cached
  • As the project got underway, there was considerable interest in seeing the how similarly K-12 and higher education were viewing emerging technology. As it turned out, there is a considerable overlap, but there are also clear distinctions.
  • collaborative environments and online communication tools
  • barriers such as policy constraints on using online tools, the fact that many students do not bring laptops to school (as opposed to many college students, who do), and policies that restrict Internet access in many schools.
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • Communication tools are a part of most students’ daily lives outside of school.
    • Michelle Krill

Blogs, skype, and many other tools apply here. Moodle has some of these built in, as do other services.
  • Collaborative Environments,

Online tools such as wikis, mindmapping sites, social networks would apply here.
  • Over the next year, we anticipate that both groups of technologies will begin to move into the mainstream of teaching practice.

I hope so. But, as I travel around the state I'm still seeing schools blocking wikis and blogs - even in IU buildings where the only users are adults! The fear of lawsuits is palpable! What we need is a news-worthy crisis to make us take this seriously.
  • Multi-touch interfaces, GPS capability, and the ability to run third-party applications make today’s mobile device an increasingly flexible tool that is readily adapted to a wide range of tasks for social networking, learning, and productivity.
  • Collaborative work, research, social networking, media sharing, virtual computers: all are enabled by applications that live in the cloud.

Google Apps for Education is useful for cloud computing, as well as collaborative work.
  • There are a number of technologies that are used to configure and manage the ways in which we view and use the Internet;

The start of this is already here with the use of RSS. Teachers and students can personalize their web experience, which in turn can personalize their learning experience.

  • What a fascinating journey for Fiona McIntosh's class – they explored the two historic flights made by Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew.'It's a pretty amazing learning object. It's absolutely loaded with things that kids love – I loved it. It's got really accurate footage from the period and kept the kids absolutely riveted. They really loved the fact that they were able to make their own newsreel. For some kids it's probably the best piece of work I've seen them do this year! Most students made wonderful observations, comparisons and displayed the knowledge they had acquired.'

newsmap - 0 views

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap's objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe. Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. Its objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news; on the contrary, it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.

Put on Google Goggles: a New Way to Search - 5 views

  •
This is a new search application for android phones, where you do not have to use your fingers to type in a search, and you do not use your voice for a voice-activated search either. Google Goggles is based on the principle of taking a picture of the object you want more information about, and submitting it to the search. The results will then give you information about the object you photographed.

Preparing Your School for an iPad Implementation - iPads in Education - 0 views

  •
"Planning is imperative for any technology initiative - iPad or otherwise. You need to ensure that you clearly understand and communicate how the technology integrates with your overall pedagogical objectives. Too many institutions purchase technology and then search for ways to utilize it ... or leave it collecting dust on the shelf. Planning needs to consider both infrastructure needs and the educational applications of the new technology. Without the proper preparation, technology initiatives are liable to become expensive failures."

Six Things I Look For When I Visit A Classroom | Mindsteps Inc. - 6 views

  • When I observe a classroom, I pay close attention to who is doing the bulk of the thinking.
  • There are typically four stages of rigorous learning: acquisition, application, assimilation, and adaptation. When I visit classrooms, I try to figure out at what stage of the rigorous learning process is the instruction.
  • When I visit a classroom, I don’t immediately look on the board to see the posted objective. I try to get a sense of the objective from the instruction itself.

Introducing Programming to Preschoolers - 2 views

  •
Since MIT's Lifelong Kindergarten group released Scratch in 2007, kids ages 8 to 13 have built more than 2.2 million animations, games, music, videos and stories using the kid-friendly programming language. Scratch allows kids to snap together graphical blocks of instructions, like Lego bricks, to control sprites-the movable objects that perform actions. Sprites can dance, sing, run and talk. Now, with a grant from the National Foundation of Science, Lifelong Kindergarten is collaborating with Tufts University's DevTech Research Group to make Scratch Jr, a new version aimed at kids in preschool to second grade. The expected launch date is summer 2012.

There was a problem with the physical preparation, the players failed to understand the importance of the game and had no faith in their abilities."
