Primary Research :: Bring History Closer to Home - 0 views

  •
Primary Research is the Internet presence of a number of projects involving high school students and local history. Central to all of these projects is collaboration among research institutions such as historical societies, libraries, archives, and museums. We are based in Beverly, Massachusetts, which serves as a starting point for students learning the process of local history research.

The wiki for the Flatclassroom Summit held this year in Mumbai, India. Check this out. Follow the links to the ustream archives and listen to the reflections of the participating teachers. You don't have to go to Mumbai to have your own flatclassroom project. As Thomas Friedman says, "If it's not happening, it's because you're not doing it."

Pennsylvania Department of Education 2010 Annual Conference Webcasts - 7 views

Both of these presentations are excellent. If you have whiteboard or clickers in your school or use promethean software you will learn so much from Deb Pickerings presentation. I recommend that everyone take time to review these archived presentations.

Here is the link for the PDE conference 2010 keynote speakers. Deb Pickering was excellent. I haven't had a chance to view Doug Reeves presentation yet but Pat Kennedy said it was good.

Just say no to 'just say no' | Dangerously Irrelevant | Big Think - 5 views

shared by anonymous on 04 Jun 11 - No Cached
  • Perhaps we'll now do the same for schools' 'just say no' policies regarding Wikipedia, mobile phones, YouTube, and other digital technologies? I know. Wishful thinking...
  • I wonder if the fact that the National Archives has hired their first "Wikipedian in Residence” will help change the minds of some of those academics who now reflexively tell their students how evil the site is. If a large traditional keeper of information can work in that online space, maybe it’s not so bad after all. :-) http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/politics/conversations-dominic-mcdevitt-parks-national-archives-connects-with-wikipedia/2011/06/02/AGCYDWHH_story.html

4 Things I Learned From Students This Week | The Principal of Change - 0 views

  • The world is at their fingertips and they have opportunities that we never did.  They should take advantage of this fact and I try to show them things that they can do.
  • We have to start talking to kids about how being safe, not banning the connections that many of them will make anyway, and many of us see value in.
  • Many educators get frustrated on hearing solutions on how to “fix” education from people that have never taught, or have limited time in schools.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  •  If we are going to talk with kids about how they are connecting online, it better come from a place of experience, as opposed to theoretical situations.
  • Kids are less likely to do great things if they feel you don’t believe in them.  They could break your heart but I guess that is a risk that I am willing to take.
