Nature Works Everywhere | Presented by The Nature Conservancy - 0 views

Nature: It's more than just a faraway beach or mountain. It's a fantastic factory that makes the building blocks of all our lives-food, drinking water, the stuff we own and the air we breathe. It makes amazing memories, and even protects us from floods and storms! That's why The Nature Conservancy and its 550 scientists have created a new initiative - Nature Works Everywhere - to help students learn the science behind how nature works for us…and how we can help keep nature running strong. Nature Works Everywhere gives teachers, students and families everything they need to start exploring and understanding nature's fantastic factory - videos, interactive games, and interactive lesson plans that align to standards. Hosted by Nature Conservancy scientists, Nature Works Everywhere takes your class around the world to visit nature at its productive best - from coral reefs to bee gardens, from Maine's snowy forests to Africa's grasslands. We'll be adding more lessons each year from around the globe on science and social studies topics that teachers can use as is or customize for their own classroom needs.

Rags to Riches takes Lemonade Tycoon to a whole new level with simulated business. In Rags to Riches, students are working to make their band a success. Students play the part of a new band going on tour with a few new songs. As they play the Rags to Riches game simulation, students must make decisions about what the band should do. They have to decide which cities are best for them to play in, what venues to play, how much money to spend on publicity and how much to charge for tickets. Students start out with $100 and must make wise decisions to continue in the simulation. When they run out of money, the game ends and they must start again.

Schools are working with a flexible definition of literacy, influenced by established core concepts of media literacy, to: * promote the development of critical thinking skills necessary to independently 'read' & 'write', and make meaning of messages in a variety of forms * promote the basic operational skills, and understanding of the languages necessary to independently 'read' and 'write' effective messages in various forms of media (print, video, audio, etc.) * instill confidence in the ability to adapt those skills and concepts to emerging forms of communication * connect and transfer the fundamentals of literacy to other forms of real world communication and problem solving Challenges & Questions: * How do you fit this into already full school schedules? * If these type of productions do take time from other discipline and skills, is it worth it? * When and how do we train teachers to be confident enough in their own media literacy to fluidly guide students? * Where is the balance that satisfies outcomes schools are traditionally responsible for with the real world needs of our students?

  • Fortunately, these two targets -- technology and project learning -- go hand in hand, says Tom Hickey, the Classrooms for the Future coach at Freedom Area High School, outside Pittsburgh.
  • Technology should not be the focus of your project, but rather the tool by which students meet the targeted standards.
  • Throughout the project, keep a keen eye on the learning you want to achieve.

Which Came First - The Technology or the Pedagogy? -- THE Journal - 0 views

  • The emphasis now is on how to use storytelling in a classroom situation, how to create a lesson where students are using blogging in a classroom."

This is where I want to go, but the first argument always is "we don't know how to use the technolgy". We do require teachers to bring already used lessons or units so we can get to this step, but we still teach the how to piece prior to moving to that lesson piece.
