PubMed Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To thoroughly examine the literature dealing with life expectancy in children with cerebral palsy and mental retardation. This review paper comprehensively reviews the literature relating to survival in children with cerebral palsy and developmental disability. CONCLUSIONS: Literature review definitively shows that children with CP and DD have a diminished life expectancy, which can be assessed based on simple clinical examination findings.

One of seventeen divisions of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) - the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. Fragile X syndrome is the leading hereditary cause of developmental disabilities in all populations. The absence of a functional fragile X gene shuts off production of a special protein in the brain needed for normal cognitive development. Without this protein, children with the syndrome will never learn normally, despite hours of therapy and rehabilitation.
