Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation to Prevent Preterm Birth in High Risk Pregnancies - ... - 0 views

Clinical Trial - Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplementation to Prevent Preterm Birth in High Risk Pregnancies - A recently completed trial of weekly injections of 17 alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17P) found significant effectiveness for 17P in preventing recurrent preterm birth. However, the group who received 17P in this trial still had a high rate of preterm birth. Several reports have shown that dietary supplementation of fish oil, which is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, reduces the risk of preterm birth. This trial tests whether adding the Omega-3 supplement to 17P therapy has the potential for further reducing the risk of preterm birth in women who have previously had a spontaneous preterm delivery. The trial will compare Omega-3 fatty acid with placebo in women receiving 17P therapy.

PubMed Abstract - Early surfactant administration with brief ventilation vs. selective surfctant and continued mechanical ventilation for preterm infants with or at risk for respiratory distress syndrome. Purpose of the purpose of this review was to compare outcomes between two strategies of surfactant administration in infants with RDS; prophylactic or early surfactant administration followed by prompt extubation, compared with later, selective use of surfactant followed by continued mechanical ventilation.

PubMed Abstract - Sensory and motor deficits in children with cerebral palsy born preterm correlate with diffusion tensor imagine abnormalities in thalamocortical pathways. Cerebral palsy (CP) is frequently linked to white matter injury in children born preterm. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a powerful technique providing precise identification of white matter microstructure. We investigated the relationship between DTI-observed thalamocortical (posterior thalamic radiation) injury, motor (corticospinal tract) injury, and sensorimotor function.

National Library of Medicine - National Institute of Health PubMed Abstract - Extrapyramidal cerebral palsy: a changing view - Earlier surveys of cerebal palsy characterized patients with extrapyramidal (choreoathetoid) cerebral palsy as having little cognitive impairment and few associated deficits. Anoxia, which has now replaced neonatal hyperbilirubinemia as a major cause of this type of cerebral palsy, predictably produces a diffuse type of brain damage.

National Library of Medicine - National Institute of Health - PubMed Article Abstract: Floppy infant syndrome - Review - On long-term follow up, cerebral palsy and mental retardation turn out to be the 2 most common causes of FIS. This review focuses on neuromuscular causes of FIS. With the advent of molecular diagnosis, a few conditions can be diagnosed by DNA analysis of the peripheral lymphocytes (myotonic dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy); however, for the most part, electrodiagnostic studies and muscle biopsy remain as essential diagnostic tools for FIS.
