Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy - The Federation's vision is that state licensing boards and their Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy will achieve a high level of public protection through a strong foundation of laws and regulatory standards in physical therapy, effective tools and systems to assess entry-level and continuing competence, and public and professional awareness of resources for public protection. In working to achieve a strong foundation of laws and regulatory standards in physical therapy, the Federation developed the Model Practice Act for Physical Therapy, a tool that jurisdictions can use as they review and update their practice acts, rules and regulations.

CAP works closely with service members across the nation to ensure they receive appropriate assistive technology for their needs, including vision or hearing loss, dexterity impairments,and cognitive difficulties. In August 2008 the Department of Defense Instruction, Assistive Technology (AT) for Wounded Service Members (DoDI 6025.22 (PDF)) was signed, establishing policy for AT programs in the Military Health System

The congressional legislation that created the National Eye Institute (NEI) mandates research on amelioration of the impact of impaired vision and blindness on health and well- being. The current NEI research program on visual impairment and its rehabilitation can be divided into six areas. Laboratory research is a fundamental yet often underappreciated pillar of research on visual impairment and blindness. A major goal of this area is to develop a scientific basis for understanding normal visual functioning that can be extended to explain the disabilities experienced by people with low vision, blindness, and other visual processing deficits.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Developmental Disabilities Study (MADDS) was the first U.S., population-based epidemiologic study of the prevalence of intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, vision impairment, and epilepsy in school-aged children. National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) staff have written scientific papers using information from MADDS. These papers look at such topics as how common autism spectrum disorders are and what causes hearing loss in children. Completed study to assess how often children who are born prematurely and have suffered brain damage, have abnormal appearance of the optic nerve (nerve in the eye) which mimics glaucoma (cupping). This optic nerve cupping is most often seen when children are born after 8 months and is rarely seen in children born before 8 months."

As part of the federal government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Eye Institute's mission is to "conduct and support research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to blinding eye diseases, visual disorders, mechanisms of visual function, preservation of sight, and the special health problems and requirements of the blind."
