U.S. Department of Education - The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation. IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and related services to more than 6.5 million eligible infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities. Infants and toddlers with disabilities (birth-2) and their families receive early intervention services under IDEA Part C. Children and youth (ages 3-21) receive special education and related services under IDEA Part B.

Several federal laws are designed to protect your child's educational rights. If your child has a learning disability (LD), he or she may qualify for additional protections. As a parent, it is important for you to understand these rights so you can advocate for your child.

When a child with cerebral palsy is unable to attend school, parents may opt to have the school come to them. By law, Home and Hospital Teaching (HHT) is a program that must be offered to students who are unable to attend a regular school program due to a physical or emotional condition. Normally, these programs are offered for a short period of time, but in some cases are appropriate for long term education.
