I noticed a number of tables at yesterday's Celebration of High Impact Practices where students were displaying their work on small laptop screens. How can we improve this experience for the next celebration - and what other venues for showcasing student work could we be using?

Jon Green, K'10, writes about the ways in which computer programming is similar to good writing of any kind. Both require detailed planning of the argument or instructions, and both value precise language.

First, the title of this article caught my eye. Then the "new" definition of Digital Humanites caught my attention. Finally the author's comments caught me off-guard. I think people should read this for the initial content (what's promised by the title and the leading question). Also people might want to think about whether some of Sathian's remarks cross a line into stereotyping and racism.

Multiple interesting discussions in this episode of the Digital Campus podcast. The first 2 discussions are particularly wiorthwhile. They open with a discussion of the ways U.S. government rules on retaining electronic records will impact the teaching of history, and follow with a discussion of the Open Syllabus Project, which analyzes millions of syllabi collected from the web.

All of these fields are expe­ri­enc­ing changes due to the inno­v­a­tive use of tech­nol­ogy in both teach­ing and research, and all of them are par­tic­i­pat­ing in a com­mon move­ment that can­not be described as DH, even though the lat­ter is inti­mately con­nected with much of it."

In the summer of 2015, from July 26 to August 2, a partnership of 23 liberal arts institutions will host ILiADS, the Institute for Liberal Arts Digital Scholarship, at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. ILiADS offers participants two ways to engage the community of liberal arts practitioners and pedagogues: a team- and project-based approach and a more traditional conference structure.

"Do nothing in isolation; always connect the events." The author says this in the context of a digital humanities program, but I think it applies to all professional development efforts, and probably to many course designs.

An interesting look at a digital archive set up to capture media and memories surrounding the Boston Marathon bombings, and the connections between the digital humanities and public history work.

This seems very much like the kinds of questions we're facing at Kenyon.

This book looks at the teaching of historical thinking, specifically in the context of the abundance of digitized primary sources and the various ways students can make sense of those sources and present their work with computers. The bibliography has received compliments for its attention to learning theory.

Interesting and even-handed review of a site providing programming tutorials designed for academics in the humanities. Might be some interesting inspirations here for a winter break project!

HASTAC's Pedagogy Project is a website collecting syllabi and course projects which use digital tools or highly collaborative approaches. If you're wondering how to use new forms of communication in assignments, or if you've got a great example to share, this will be a great resource!
