One of Wikileaks' greatest source of controversy was that it became a platform from which some information that was detrimental to different organizations was published. Now Daniel Domscheit-Berg who was previously one of the leading analysts for Wikileaks has cofounded Openleaks that will serve as a site which will only relay the information to news outlets. Essentially this will be another way in which the media will be able to find current news. This demonstrates the manner in which the internet is adapting their approach to grabbing information. Attached is the OpenLeaks website which has a short video about the differences between the sites and where Wikileaks fell short. Look on the about section to read about it. There is another tagged site that goes into their basic differences prior to it being set up.
Is that market responsible or necessary? We could question just how dangerous a new trend of "whistleblowers" could be. Sometimes, it must be admitted, that to be responsible to citizens and to their safety, the government must keep secrets. The question must result however, who has the authority to make the decisions regarding what can be released, and what good will the released information do to the citizens? Other than increasing transparency, is there really a function of sites like Wikileaks? Just a thought, not saying I have an opinion either way on it.
