This French website created for native French speakers is full of dictées - dictations. This site is divided into grade levels based on the French school system. (For a brief run-down of the grade levels in France visit the blog from Transparent Language entitled À l'École!: French and American Grade Levels Compared at http://blogs.transparent.com/french/a-lecole/) Since the ladictee.fr website is targeted toward elementary aged children, the language level works well for beginner and intermediate French L2 learners. Even though a dictée isn't what people would call a "communicative" activity, it does serve the purpose of helping students make connections between spoken language and written language, especially since French spelling is not phonemic. The site includes various dictées for each level, along with a PDF of the written text so student's can check their work. Doing dictées can help students improve their spelling, recognize spelling patterns, and learn to listen for cues in spoken speech that indicate whether the person is speaking in the plural or singular (often tricky in the French language). Note: When doing a dictée, students are focused on writing down what is said word for word, and NOT on comprehension. It would NOT be effective to give a student a dictée and then immediately ask them specific comprehension questions about what they just heard.

In-class response system that allows you to ask multiple-choice and short answer questions. You can also have students draw as a response. Limitations: You cannot ask more than one question at a time. You cannot enter questions into the system, so you would need to ask the questions orally or on a slide. The system does not appear to save responses to review later. The system does not indicate whether answers are correct or incorrect.

Quickly create a webpage. You do not need to create an account. Limitations: The editor is very simple. You can include text and images, but not much in the way of modern web styling.

Word cloud generator. You do not need to create an account to use it. Limitations: No embed option.

Take notes (saved in Google Drive) as you watch a YouTube video. Video on left, notes on right. Use keyboard commands to pause & play video. (Keyboard commands do not work in Firefox.)

Simple web-based whiteboard for drawing and collaborating. Does not require registration. Also works on smartphones and tablets.

Video and text chat. You do not need to create an account--just share the link. You can also watch online videos together, including Netflix and YouTube.

Video tutorials on Japanese pronunciation, including intonation. Quizzes are not accessible without a UBC account.

This website will email or text you at designated intervals to remind you of whatever text you choose. Good for learning vocabulary. Limitations: You need to install a bookmarklet to use this. When you use the bookmarklet, it appears not to work, but it is actually working.

Creates HMTL quizzes. The learner gets the correct answer by clicking on a drop-down box. Limitations: The learner does not submit answers, so the instructor cannot know the results.

Create A Quiz, Online testing, Make quizzes, test & exams Limitations: Free version does not record who took the quiz.

Creates self-graded quizzes using javascript. Limitations: Requires some web programming knowledge to use. Does not report the results to the instructor.

Reviews and ratings of educational technology websites, games, apps, etc. Not specifically language-focused.

List of tools that do not require registration to use.

Use your mouse or trackpad to input text in Gmail and Google Docs. Useful for practicing handwriting, especially in languages that do not use the Latin alphabet.

Learn Arabic has short, free lessons on basic Arabic grammar and vocabulary. While the transliteration system from Arabic words to English pronunciation is not the best, each vocab list features recorded audio of the word.

Generate a fake newspaper clipping. Limitations: Does not work with non-Latin scripts.

HTML5 collaborative word processor and whiteboard. Students do not need to make an account to collaborate.
