"National Lab Network is more than just a day. It's a nationwide initiative to build local communities of support that will foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students and educators. Volunteers from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson spent their weekend helping inspire children from local school districts to get involved in aviation. Volunteers participated in the Build-a-Plane program at Begich Middle School. The program is designed to help motivate children to take an active interest in aviation and life. The program got off the ground of the school after speaker Barrington Irving, the youngest and first African-American to pilot a plane around the world, stopped by the school for a speech, according to Angie Slingluff, FAA Education coordinator.

A group of 12 teenagers from all across the Portland/Vancouver area have teamed up to build an airplane. It's a one of a kind program developed by local aviation enthusiasts who are now passing on what they know to a new generation. Vancouver's Mountain View High School. For six hours every Saturday, 12 local teens get to build an airplane with the help of dedicated mentors who are all volunteering their time to help in the effort. Scott McDaniels helped create the teen flight program.
