" The students of Chevak Aviation (chevakaviation.com) at Chevak School have been working on a Build A Plane Rans S-6S kit airplane. We completed the Rans and passed the airworthiness inspection on March 24th, 2011. After the inspection and all the necessary paper work was completed we took advantage of the nice weather and flew the airplane. The maiden flight lasted for 30 minutes and it went as planned. The S-6 is a very nice flying airplane with great performance. "

"Chevak students and family members gathered in brisk conditions to watch as the Rans S-6S Coyote took flight over the tundra, after receiving its airworthiness inspection and certification. The aircraft was built by Chevak High School students as part of an aviation course offered by the school located on the tundra in western Alaska. "The aircraft was beautifully built and was obviously the pride of the aeronautics class at the school," said Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR) John Davis."

Volunteers from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson spent their weekend helping inspire children from local school districts to get involved in aviation. Volunteers participated in the Build-a-Plane program at Begich Middle School. The program is designed to help motivate children to take an active interest in aviation and life. The program got off the ground of the school after speaker Barrington Irving, the youngest and first African-American to pilot a plane around the world, stopped by the school for a speech, according to Angie Slingluff, FAA Education coordinator.
