Using aviation education to promote interest in science, technology, engineering, and math in rural Alaska. AvSTEM is currently in two villages in western Alaska. Grant Funk has lived in Hooper Bay for 10 years, and is actively involved with youth and aviation education in the Hooper Bay school. Over the past 3 years, the Hooper Bay AvSTEM program has been building a Thorp T-211 experimental airplane through Build A Plane. They hope to fly the Thorp in the next year. Grant also does distance education aviation courses with the Pilot Station, AK school.

NBAA's scholarship program, generously supported through sponsorships, offers nearly $100,000 annually in cash awards as tuition reimbursement for enrolled students, and that number is nearly matched in monetary and training awards for working professionals. NBAA currently offers six scholarships to qualified students studying aviation-related curricula at institutions of higher learning. The Association also sponsors seven monetary and training scholarships to promote professionalism and the advancement of careers for aviation professionals, such as flight department managers, flight attendants, maintenance technicians, schedulers and dispatchers.

"Pam Melroy, Pilot, 100th Shuttle Flight - STS-92 - Approximately twenty percent of the United States astronauts are women. In the history of the program only three women have been designated as pilot astronauts. On October 11, 2000 Lt. Col. Pamela Ann Melroy USAF, after a two-year delay, became the third woman to make her "rookie" flight into space as pilot on the orbiter Discovery.

Conversations with adults and kids around the country have reiterated that the basics of the Build A Plane idea are viable and remain the same: * There is an overwhelming number of teenage kids in America who would be excited to join a Build A Plane project. * There is an overwhelming number of adults who are willing and capable of mentoring Build A Plane programs. * There is a huge supply of aircraft that are no longer flown or are not airworthy and would make great project planes. * There are hundreds of kit aircraft that are purchased, but never completed. * Owners who donate aircraft not only give a wonderful gift, but also may qualify for tax benefits from Uncle Sam.

The Robotics track of the Mechanical Engineering Degree Program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Prescott Campus provides a strong undergraduate education with a focus on the design of robotic systems for aerospace applications such as autonomous ground, air or space vehicles. The robotics curriculum combines a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of engineering kinematics, dynamics and controls with integrated analysis and design topics ranging from robotics real-time control, sensor integration, probabilistic robotics and mechatronics.
