Teaching about the atmosphere?  Here are a few ideas for the classroom. Activities about the atmosphere are particularly well suited for talking about air pressure, since air pressure is essentially the weight of the atmosphere pushing down on us.  At the Exploratorium we had a couple of really great activities to get at this idea.

Rinker Buck's Flight of Passage. It's an engrossing story of two brothers who flew a refurbished Piper Cub from New Jersey to California in the summer of 1964.

NVAA - Engine failure experience in IMC. This is the communications recording between the pilot of a Lancair Legacy N913MP and a Seattle Center controller. The Lancair experienced engine failure while on a flight from Redmond, OR to Boise, ID. Icing, engine failure complicates things. This is how it should be done! Two people VERY composed during the whole emergency. Enjoy the excitement!

An interesting object lesson in physics and aerodynamics - I share this not because it's in any way important, but because it's so damn weird/cool.
