July 26, 26 DC-3s took off for a formation flight to EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh. The incredible sound of 52 idling engines was surpassed only by the sight of the airplanes passing overhead, in flights of four. One returned to the ramp with a maintenance problem, another aborted its takeoff because of an engine issue, and a third returned with high oil temperature. The remaining 23 made a grand arrival in Oshkosh with an overhead pass.
Raymonde de Laroche became the first woman to earn a pilot certificate on March 8, 1910. Goyer launched the events in 2010 to celebrate the centennial and to encourage more women to become pilots by introducing a record number of nonpilot girls and women to flying during the year.
The technique is called high dynamic range and involves blending up to nine different exposures of the subject. This wide range of exposures allows the final image to come closer to the extreme range between light and dark that the human eye can see.
Pilots at Renton Municipal Airport in Washington state took 170 women and girls on introductory flights Dec. 5, and the airport is now recognized by the Centennial of Licensed Women Pilots for introducing the most girls and women to flying in one day.
