  • Best Practices, Strategies, and Recommendations for Improving School Climate and Culture
  • ED’s guidance is developed to assist stakeholders with effectively selecting and implementing supports that work to improve outcomes for children.
  • In addition to the four levels of evidence for choosing interventions, the ED guidance document emphasizes that “ways to strengthen the effectiveness of ESEA investments include identifying local needs, selecting evidence-based interventions that SEAs, LEAs, and schools have the capacity to implement, planning for and then supporting the intervention, and examining and reflecting upon how the intervention is working,” as illustrated in the figure from the guidance document (U.S. Department of Education, 2016, p. 3).

Lost at School By: Dr. Ross Greene
  • Lost at School
  • In so many schools, kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges are still poorly understood and treated in a way that is completely at odds with what is now known about how they came to be challenging in the first place.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • A review of ten years of research found that these policies have not only failed to make schools safe or more effective in handling student behavior, but have actually increased behavior problems and dropout rates. Yet public elementary and secondary schools in the United States continue to dole out a whopping 110,000 expulsions and 3 million suspensions each year, along with countless tens of millions of detentions.
  • These kids would like nothing better than to be able to handle the social, emotional, and behavioral challenges being placed on them at school and in life, but they can’t seem to pull it off.
  • Three massive shifts are required: (1) a dramatic improvement in understanding the factors that set the stage for challenging behavior in kids; (2) creating mechanisms for helping these kids that are predominantly proactive instead of reactive; and (3) creating processes so people can work on problems collaboratively.

      Classroom management
  • 5 Principles of Outstanding Classroom Management
  • 1. Take Care of Yourself to Take Care of Your Students
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • Countless studies corroborate the idea that self-care reduces stress, which can deplete your energy and impair your judgment.
  • 2. Focus on Building Relationships
  • Many educators noted that a teacher’s ability to balance warmth and strong boundaries is key to successful relationships—and classroom management.
  • 3. Set Rules, Boundaries, and Expectations (and Do It Early)
  • Many others cautioned that while enforcing rules consistently is critical, it’s important to pick your battles too—especially if those confrontations are going to be public
  • 4. Take a Strength-Based Approach
  • A strength-based lens means never forgetting to look beneath the surface of behavior, even when it’s inconvenient
  • don’t forget to continue to work to deepen the connection, being mindful of the context and using language thoughtfully.
  • Finally, cultural differences can also play an unconscious role in our expectations of whether a student will succeed, so it’s important to reflect on any stereotypes that come up for you.
  • 5. Involve Parents and Guardians
  • The majority of teachers send home reports of both positive and negative behaviors—it’s critical to do the former, too—and also use email and text services to communicate about upcoming events, due dates, and student progress.

What is ENVoY and How does it Impact Teacher Efficacy? | MESPA Advocate Blog - 0 views

  • What is ENVoY and How does it Impact Teacher Efficacy?
    • nikkilh

ENVoY and how it impacts teachers
  • The most significant byproduct of deep levels of ENVoY implementation relates to teacher efficacy, which gives teachers the ability to perform at higher levels while having a positive mindset about their work as a professional.
  • creating a safe and nurturing classroom environment is critical to meeting the emotional, social and academic learning needs of students and that classroom management training is a key component to supporting both pre-service and in-service teachers
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Classrooms are increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse and have a wide range of learning abilities in every class, and because most teachers are Caucasian and derive from middle-class backgrounds (Tileston & Darling, 2008), these educators may be unintentionally unaware of the needs that diverse learners require, which include the following: significant relationships, assistance with prioritizing and planning, problem solving, locus of control, ability to trust, and responding to criticism.
  • Understanding the differences between self-efficacy and teacher efficacy allows the educator to interact with their students in a manner that produces less power and control in the classroom when operating through the lens of teacher efficacy

      Identifying 2e Students
  • Gifted learners exhibit different characteristics, traits, and ways to express their giftedness.
  • Giftedness is represented through all racial, ethnic, income levels, and exceptionality groups.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Early identification in school improves the likelihood that gifts will be developed into talents.
  • Because no two gifted children are alike is important to collect information on both the child's performance and potential through  a combination of objective (quantifiably measured) and subjective (personally observed) identification instruments in order to identify gifted and talented students.

      The need for gifted programs
  • Gifted programming positively influences students’ futures. Several longitudinal studies have shown that gifted programs have a positive effect on students’ post-secondary plans.
  • Further benefits of gifted programs have been shown to include that students who had participated in gifted programs maintained their interests over time and stayed involved in creative productive work after they finished college and graduate school.
