I have a cousin that has done a lot of work with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in Florida. It is an organization that works for the rights of migrant farm workers. http://www.ciw-online.org/freedom_march/index.html. There is also a link to the Modern Day Slavery Museum that travels around the South Eastern US.

Elliott Roosevelt I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

In our River of Doubt book, the author often compares Teddy Roosevelts son, Kermit, to his brother Elliott. Both had issues with alcohol and attempted suicide. T. Roosevelt could see these similarites and didnt' want his son to go down the same path of his brother. I found it interesting to learn more about his brother who he didn't want his son to turn out like!

Immigration to the United States | Economic History Services - 0 views

  • The gender breakdown and age structure remain fairly consistent in the period before 1930. Generally, about 60% of the immigrants were male. As to age structure, about 20% of immigrants were children, 70% were adults up to age 44, and 10% were older than 44. In most of the period and for most countries, immigrants were typically young single males, young couples, or, especially in the era before the steamship, families. For particular countries, such as Ireland, a large number of the immigrants were single women (Cohn, 1995).

  • To promote democratic interactions between people, Freire suggests that teachers problematize the issue being discussed.  When issues or questions are problematized by teachers who work through critical pedagogy, readily made answers are not available.  Students realize that although some questions do have clear-cut answers, many of our deeper questions do not have obvious answers.  When students learn that teachers are human beings just as everyone else, and that teachers do not know everything but that they are also learners, students then feel more confident in their own search for answers and more comfortable to critically raise questions of their own.  The banking method denies the need for dialogue because it assumes that the teacher is the one who possesses all the answers and the students are ignorant and in need of the teachers’ knowledge. In order to problematize a subject, the teacher assumes a humble and open attitude.

How could you promote independent problem-solving in the classroom without leading students along the way?
