Have students research idea and make plans for thier cars before they begin production. They will be testing a hypothesis as opposed to just using the trial and error process.

Favorite project growing up! Insturctions and ideas for mouse trap car models. Have students design on own, then come up with a "team" plan through cooperative learning.

There are a ton of resources for extension activities with this unit on this site. This is a hands-on approach to rock and mineral exploration.
  •
Students explore the differences and similarities between rocks and minerals by investigating samples of these earth materials, performing a series of tests similar to geologists' field tests, and reading about rocks and minerals and how they are used.

This activity is perfect for cross-curricular work with ELA.  Learning to write effective is invaluable in many fields, not just science.

A key to good science is that it is reproduceable.  This activity will teach students how to use precise language in order to give good directions in future lab reports.

I like this activity because it works well for a wide variety of students.  For students who are easily overwhelmed reduce the number of scents to match.  High level students could be asked to come up with an idea for another experiment like this one but for a different sense.  Consider allergies when you plan this activity!

This is a fun activity that teaches young scientists to use an under utilized sense, smell.
