"Come on - why not?" Those were the comments of the first five people who I knew that I ran into Friday night at my first visit to the Elks Rodeo. Yes ladies and gentlemen, it was my first rodeo.

The Tracy Elks Club's latest effort to help youngsters get into sports included a little coaching this summer from the golf pro at Old River Golf Course. This was the third of four week-long youth golf clinics hosted by the Elks and Old River. Curtis Matsuno, who teaches at Old River and coaches players as they prepare for top amateur tournaments, said he's learned that a lot of families want to get their kids into the sport. "The 62nd annual Millville Elks Lodge No. 580 Sports Frolic was held recently. The event was dedicated to Phil Berry, who passed away in fall 2009 and had been involved in one position or another on the committee for more than 10 years."

Beaver Falls Elks National Championships? wow

The truth be known that in most organizations, there are a tiny handful of overacheivers who make things happen. Here's proof of those selfless efforts at Wallace ID elks

"A charity golf tournament hosted by the Desert Hot Springs Elks Lodge raised a record $18,000, the club announced. About $7,000 will go to several Desert Hot Springs youth charities, and the remaining money will go to the California-Hawaii Elks Major Protect, a nonprofit group that helps disabled youth, the club said."

"A total of 17 area student-athletes received a record $15,500 in scholarships at the 52nd annual Elks Gridiron Committee Sports Banquet, held Sunday at the Elks Lodge."

The Mission Viejo Elks recently presented their annual Youth Appreciation Awards to several boys and girls who excelled in scholastics, sports and scouting during the past twelve months.

DANVILLE -- In sports, competitors can become so bogged down by the pursuit of titles or statistics that they often lose sight of what is truly important. The simple act of competing and being part of a team moves into the shadows in place of the glorious pursuit of stardom.

Arthur Robinson is a big man, and when he laughs, the area around him seems to light up. Robinson had caught a 6-inch perch, his first fish of the day, and when I told him to "hold that monster up" for a photo, he broke up laughing. The fishing was slow, but no one could say we weren't having a good time on a beautiful summer day. Robinson, who lives in Muskegon Heights and was a C-130 transport plane crew member in Vietnam, was one of 46 veterans hosted last week by members of St. Joseph Elks Lodge 541 for a day of food, fishing and fun. The vets are all patients at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Battle Creek. The Elks rounded up 16 local boats, some run by charter fishermen and others by sport fishermen, to take the vets out. All volunteered their time.

If you wonder why this lodge does such a tremendous job... it is how they nurture and honor all the volunteers. A great lesson for all of us
