Grass skirts, flowered shirts and exotic cocktails gave the flavor of the South Seas at the recent inaugural Rotary Luau Fundraiser held by the Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club. Co-sponsored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Santa Clarita, Lodge No. 2379, the event helped benefit the club's biannual donations to 15 nonprofit organizations in the SCV.

MATILLA, Florida - Saw it with my own eyes. The Elks, that would be the Benevolent Order of Elks, are recruiting members and advertising themselves with Yahoo banner ads. Good job. In our Bowling Alone era, most hereditary and benevolent societies are struggling, and none more struggling than what were traditionally male benevolent groups. All of these groups still play a strong part in our culture, millions of members, though they are mostly forgotten by the media. If you read The New York Times, you wouldn't even know they exist. But the Jaycees, Rotary, Kiwanis, Sertoma and Knights of Columbus all still soldier on, though members are getting older and these groups must attract new members to stay viable.

The Fort Morgan Elks Lodge resembled an oceanside environment Saturday during the Dog Days of Summer Sand Volleyball Tournament. Six truckloads of sand were brought in to create two courts for the competition, which also featured a barbecue, music and the Fort Morgan Rotary Club s dunk tank. (John Brennan/Fort Morgan Times) There was plenty of sand at the Dog Days of Summer Sand Volleyball Tournament at the Fort Morgan Elks Lodge on Saturday.

Elks guard an overlooked treasure. Elks National Memorial- Chicago - 0 views

Davis, 25, has lived in Lincoln Park for years. He walks past the building - a massive gray dome encircled by a hefty colonnade - almost every day. But while the Elks National Memorial and Headquarters, located at the intersection of Diversey Avenue and Sheridan Road, is open to the public seven days a week during the summer, Davis shrugged it off. "I just don't think I really know that much about the Elks," he said. "They're up there with Rotary and those other groups. You know, stuff your grandpa was in. But I don't really even know what the hell they do."

self segregation - one opinion on why we are losing members - 0 views

  •
Another characteristic of our times is that social clubs such as the Lions, Masons, Elks, Rotary, Moose, etc. have been losing members since the 1960s. They are broad-based groups without a political agenda, where "brothers" are likely to hold a variety of views. Now, people tend to socialize in groups with sharply defined political goals -the ACLU, the Federalist Society, the Club for Growth, EMILY's List- and to spend hours in Internet discussions with like-minded associates.
