This program is an employment readiness program held for teenagers who are immediate family members of the military and of Ft Monmouth. Burlesque comes to Long Beach, raising $1,500 plus for Tall Elks charity By John Nechvatal For the Observer LONG BEACH - On Saturday, July 11, the Long Beach Elks lodge provided an entertainment first on the Peninsula. Reminiscent of the days before television and the Internet when live shows were the rage, a good old-fashioned burlesque show was staged in the Elks ballroom. The 12 "performers," all members of Long Beach Elks Lodge No. 1937, had the chance to show off their feminine side to the delight of a packed house. The event was the brainchild of past Lecturing Knight Natalie Hanson, who has owned an ad agency and a production company. Costuming proved to be Natalie's largest hurdle as most of the performers are not exactly sized for the runway. The evening began at 6 p.m. with a delicious ham dinner served to all. Ham was chosen

In 1909, the annual convention of the fraternal organization known as The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks included, among other diversions: a visit to an ostrich farm, "free to all Elks and their ladies"; a yacht regatta; parades; a "daylight" fireworks display; 1,000 cars at members' disposal; and 10,000 pounds of "beef, pork, and mutton," barbecued in "ten mammoth barbecue pits."

The News Tribune has confirmed that members of Tacoma Elks #174 last night approved the sale of its property at South 23rd and Union streets. A few weeks ago, we reported that the lodge turned down Wal-Mart's bid to buy the 17-acre property but that the group was close to an agreement with another developer.

When it comes to community events, it's hard to imagine Elks Lodge No. 2127 or Emblem Club No. 350 not being involved. Activities for scholarship dollars, literacy in the schools, helping students finance out-of-state travel, wounded veterans, fundraisers for community members whose homes have been destroyed or are facing serious medical challenges or any of a number of issues Elks and the Emblem Club are there. Saturday, they're at it again with the annual July Fourth scholarship barbecue. Admission is $15 at the door or free with a $100 raffle ticket. In addition to food and games for the kids, a raffle drawing begins at 1 p.m. with more than $16,000 in cash prizes.

The Maine Elks Association (MEA) recently honored several youths from across the State of Maine as part of their 80th Annual State Convention held at the Augusta Elks Lodge. The youths were recognized as state winners of contests sponsored by the association. The awards were presented at a special banquet, attended by over 200 members, guests, and families of the recipients.

The South Hills Elks new membership drive is off to a stupendous start! The Elks welcomed and installed 18 new Elks on Tuesday night May 12 at the Lodge. The New Elks were instructed on our virtues, bylaws and our Charity mission.
