"Tiffin Elks Lodge 94 is celebrating 127 years in Tiffin. Exalted Ruler Joe Steinmetz, who joined the lodge seven years ago, is helping plan the event with other members. Why celebrate 127 years? "We want to commemorate 127 years of benevolence in Tiffin and celebrate another 100 years of active involvement in our community," Steinmetz said. Friday, dinner and live entertainment will take place for members and guests. Events Saturday are open to the public at 106 E. Perry St. Indoor and outdoor activities are to continue all day Saturday, with proceeds to benefit Disabled American Veterans. At 8 a.m., registration opens for a 5K run or 1K walk. An opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. and the race steps off at 10 a.m., following a route along Riverside Drive and downtown Tiffin. Registration for the 5K and 1K can be done up to the day of the race at $15 per person. The age groups are: 12 and under; 13-19; 20-34; 35-50; and over 50. Forms can be obtained at the Elks, Clover Club, Madison Street Tavern, Varsity Barber Shop, Champs Barber Shop, Pit Stop, Reino's and Ace Hardware. Checks should be made payable to Tiffin Elks Lodge 94. A grill and beverage bar opens at noon to serve all day. A mini-golf challenge and cornhole tournament are to begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot. The cost is $20 per team for the cornhole tournament. Next, 8-11 p.m. is the "rooty music" of Dragon Wagon, with a mix of bluegrass, rock and folk. Steinmetz said the Elks National Foundation issues grants to qualifying lodges to meet community needs. Steinmetz said the Elks have partnered with organizations such as Winterfest and Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival and are looking for grant opportunities for both events this year. "new civic club is forming in Mount Pleasant and the drive to garner members has begun. Several interested parties have formed a group to established an Elks Lodge east of the Cooper and they need 100 members to do it. Summerville Elks Club members started the process, but after being transferred out of state, Rodley Millet, Gordan Hanson and Michael Fenwrick took the reigns along with several others to keep the ball rolling."

MATILLA, Florida - Saw it with my own eyes. The Elks, that would be the Benevolent Order of Elks, are recruiting members and advertising themselves with Yahoo banner ads. Good job. In our Bowling Alone era, most hereditary and benevolent societies are struggling, and none more struggling than what were traditionally male benevolent groups. All of these groups still play a strong part in our culture, millions of members, though they are mostly forgotten by the media. If you read The New York Times, you wouldn't even know they exist. But the Jaycees, Rotary, Kiwanis, Sertoma and Knights of Columbus all still soldier on, though members are getting older and these groups must attract new members to stay viable.

It's hard to believe that a lodge this old would lose so many members or attract so few new members that it had to sell it's golf course. I don't know what kind of shape the course was in but if in decent shape then only mismanagment over the years could be the only reason its gone.

The Grand Lodge membership report shows they went from 295 to 104 members in five years. That's pretty disturbing.

Carlisle Elks Lodge #578 held the Initiation Ceremony for 13 new members on Tuesday, September 15, 2009. A warm welcome to the new class! September 15th also marked the annual visit of our District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Warren Specht, and Grand Esquire Carl Hilton. DDGER Specht encouraged the Lodge and its leadership to continue "the good work" that has been evident within. Thanks to all of the members who attended and made the event a success!

Fraternal lodge members attending the meeting voted overwhelmingly to proceed with construction, according to Al Kersich, exalted ruler of Elks Club Lodge 394."

Thought you had to be proposed by a member and running ads was no no.

The South Hills Elks Lodge #2213 Is Accepting New member Applications During the Month of April and May. Must be 21 years of Age and an American Citizen. The Lodge is a private fraternal organization dedicated to assisting the Youth and veterans of the South Hills area.

Arthur Robinson is a big man, and when he laughs, the area around him seems to light up. Robinson had caught a 6-inch perch, his first fish of the day, and when I told him to "hold that monster up" for a photo, he broke up laughing. The fishing was slow, but no one could say we weren't having a good time on a beautiful summer day. Robinson, who lives in Muskegon Heights and was a C-130 transport plane crew member in Vietnam, was one of 46 veterans hosted last week by members of St. Joseph Elks Lodge 541 for a day of food, fishing and fun. The vets are all patients at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Battle Creek. The Elks rounded up 16 local boats, some run by charter fishermen and others by sport fishermen, to take the vets out. All volunteered their time.

It's surprising that the GL would force them to obtain this many more new members. Hell, there are a dozen lodges in NC that have under a 100 members. Going to force them to increase too?

Question: How long have you been an Elk and how did you begin to rise through the ranks of Elkdom? Answer: This is my 11th year. As an Elk, if you are married, your spouse can go in (the club) all the time with you. But I did not have a male who was a member, so I had to join as a female as a member of the lodge. I had a friend of mine propose me, and that's how I became an Elk. I joined Dec. 21 of '98 ... and there was a change of officers (that year). We had no chaplain that year. And I had a dream in the shower that I'm going to be the next chaplain. Dave Myers was the exalted ruler at that time. It was a couple of weeks later, I was sitting at the club, and he (tapped me on the shoulder), and I turned around and said, ``Yeah, I'll do it.'' He said, ``What?'' I said, ``I'll be chaplain.'' He said, ``How did you know.'' I said, ``I dreamed I was going to be your next chaplain.'' I was chaplain for six years. I was appointed by six different exalted rulers.

May 12, 2009 - Third-graders at Fletcher Walker Elementary each received a dictionary from members of the Elks Lodge in Susanville. Russell Brown, a former exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge, distributed the books Tuesday, May 5. The dictionaries are purchased through contributions from local Elks members and given to all third-grade students in Lassen County.

Two local organizations have combined their resources in order to more adequately provide assistance to members of the surrounding community. On Friday, Modern Woodmen Representative JoLynne Stainbrook and Modern Woodmen Youth Service Club representative Adina Findley presented members of the Fort Scott Elks Lodge with a check for $500 that will be used for various Elks projects, according to Stainbrook.

Early every Tuesday morning, members of the North Fort Myers Elks Lodge #2742 are busy getting ready for a weekly event. On that day, members of the Veterans Committee feed local homeless individuals and provide them with basics that improve their quality of life. The award-winning Veterans Outreach Program has been recognized as one of the best in the country by the Elks organization. It is also a model for other lodges and organizations across the U.S., Veterans Administration officials said.

DOVER - Emblem Club members from across the state converged on the Garrison City Sunday to fill backpacks with goodies for youths who've had family members in the military deploy overseas. The effort to make "hero packs" was a part of Operation: Military Kids.
