It's no wonder the elks have lost so many members in Ca. These lodges are pricing the dues to cover the cost of running their facilities. In years past the elks were noted for "None but the best, rich or poor". Well, the poor, those uninterested in the lodge facilities or on fixed incomes are not going to join the Elks. There are plenty of organizations around that one can do good with and NOT subsidize someone elses playground.

Like the Moose and the Masons, the Elks are a social group that finds ways to serve others. According to club president Bobbi Galbraith, the Elks are second only to the federal government in the amount of scholarship money it gives to students. The Elks also support programs that help the families of children with disabilities and provide eyesight screening tests in schools to detect problems and get the children the help they need early on.

May 12, 2009 - Third-graders at Fletcher Walker Elementary each received a dictionary from members of the Elks Lodge in Susanville. Russell Brown, a former exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge, distributed the books Tuesday, May 5. The dictionaries are purchased through contributions from local Elks members and given to all third-grade students in Lassen County.

Bobbie Galbraith has been an active member of the Petaluma Elks Lodge No. 901 for eight years, but never imagined that she'd be nominated as the club's first woman to serve as exalted ruler (president). Terry Hankins Bobbie Galbraith is the Petaluma Elks Club's first woman to serve as exalted ruler (president). "They kept asking me over the years when I was going to be exalted ruler and I'd say I was just busy circling the chairs right now," said Galbraith, who has served in a number of different offices within the club. "I've gone through the chairs now and have paid my dues. It's such an honor to be named exalted ruler. Everyone has been so supportive of me."

Grass skirts, flowered shirts and exotic cocktails gave the flavor of the South Seas at the recent inaugural Rotary Luau Fundraiser held by the Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club. Co-sponsored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Santa Clarita, Lodge No. 2379, the event helped benefit the club's biannual donations to 15 nonprofit organizations in the SCV.

(Mike Jory/Times-Herald) The nearly 50-year-old Redwood Parkway Elks Lodge facility may be sold, though the organization's Vallejo chapter will not fold, a club official said. Local lodge members OK'd the facility's sale, and a one-tenant developer has expressed interest, said Fred Sessler, the real estate broker handling the matter.

This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Elks Lodge in Morden. Morden Elks Lodge is a fraternal organization that raises funds to support local community and children's needs along with supporting the Elks of Canada Purple Cross Fund. This fund is accessible locally to help out children in need of medical care where additional funding is required. While most fraternal organizations are struggling to find new members, the Morden Elks are fortunate to have had a large number of young men - 28 in total - join the organization in the past few years.
