On Sep. 24, 1908, the Elks Grand Lodge was petitioned to establish a Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge in Elkins by a group of local individuals hoping to have a club in Elkins. The Grand Lodge granted the charter committee's request on July 15, 1909, as Elkins Lodge No. 1135.

Carlisle Elks Lodge #578 held the Initiation Ceremony for 13 new members on Tuesday, September 15, 2009. A warm welcome to the new class! September 15th also marked the annual visit of our District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Warren Specht, and Grand Esquire Carl Hilton. DDGER Specht encouraged the Lodge and its leadership to continue "the good work" that has been evident within. Thanks to all of the members who attended and made the event a success!

VERO BEACH - The Vero Beach Elk's Lodge # 1774 is proud to announce that Monsignor Irvine Nugent of St. Helen's Parish has graciously accepted their invitation to be this year's Grand Marshall for the St. Patrick's Day Parade being sponsored by the Vero Beach Elks Lodge.

"LANCASTER -- The local Elks lodge was closed and its charter revoked because of financial problems that included failing to pay bills. The club's finances were among the reasons cited in a letter, obtained by the Eagle-Gazette, sent to lodge members by Elks Grand Lodge. The letter was written and signed by Grand Exalted Ruler James Nichelson."

What a tragedy as there are no winners here. Losing this lodge is a tremendous loss for the Elks and gives the Order quite a public black eye. Hopefully the remaining members of the Austin lodge can keep the facility. Even if they do win in court though it will be quite a struggle to regain the former membership, become financially stable and remain a viable non-profit for the long term. I wish them the best of luck. They will need it.

It's hard to believe that a lodge this old would lose so many members or attract so few new members that it had to sell it's golf course. I don't know what kind of shape the course was in but if in decent shape then only mismanagment over the years could be the only reason its gone.

The Grand Lodge membership report shows they went from 295 to 104 members in five years. That's pretty disturbing.

Season in and season out, Dave Powers is helping veterans. Take today. The semi-retired Grand Island salesman is making sure that the Re-Creations - a college-age traveling entertainment group for hospitalized veterans - makes it to the city for the group's 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday shows in Grand Island at the Veterans Medical Center and Veterans Home, respectively.

"The La Grande Elks Lodge was able to donate 87 of its seats back to the old Liberty Theatre because it is entering a new, uncertain chapter in its history. The fraternal organization is selling its building due to declining membership, said trustee Gordon Foster."

Second place is not bad for this elks lodge. I'm sure it makes their members proud as well.

An East Hanover resident pleaded guilty today to stealing from an Elks Lodge and has agreed to cooperate with the state in its prosecution of former Morris County Tax Commissioner Anthony Crecco on the same theft charges. Advertisement Konstantin ''Stan'' Belenky, 42, was publicly revealed by authorities for the first time today as the unnamed co-conspirator referred to in a state grand jury indictment returned in April against Crecco, 62, of East Hanover. Belenky, an employee of the prominent real estate appraisal firm Certified Valuations, Inc., agreed as part of his plea to give up his public jobs as municipal tax assessor in Franklin, Somerset County, and in Berkeley Heights, Union County.

The Tracy Elks Club's latest effort to help youngsters get into sports included a little coaching this summer from the golf pro at Old River Golf Course. This was the third of four week-long youth golf clinics hosted by the Elks and Old River. Curtis Matsuno, who teaches at Old River and coaches players as they prepare for top amateur tournaments, said he's learned that a lot of families want to get their kids into the sport. Pittsburgh Elks are screwed although the Grand Lodge may have to absorb a big chunk of this huge award. ( I apparently didn't post this in Nov)

hope this is a turnaround. Unlikely though

(1) I'd love to read this article, but you have to subscribe to the Houston Chronicle to read more than the first 2 - 3 sentences. (2) If the Elks want to attract millennials, step #1 is to REQUIRE EVERY LODGE to post full and complete information on their pages at www.elks.org, and then keep it absolutely current and up to date.

Every lodge needs a man like this. (or woman)

EVERETT - It's not as big as the grand old place, but it's brand spanking new, it's a room with a view and they can call it their own. After nearly two years of meeting in a temporary location, the Elks Club has moved into its new digs at 2802 Hoyt Ave., at the intersection with California Street. The club has been using the meeting room on the main floor and the lounge on the second floor since early July. The lounge has a view of Possession Sound.
