One of the most important responsibilities of a website is to communicate with its visitors. Regardless of whether the site is a blog, a portfolio site, a corporate site, or an e-commerce site, it exists to communicate with visitors. The communication in some cases is two ways (blog comments are an example), but in many ways the website is communicating to visitors before they even offer their feedback. In order for the site to communicate effectively the designer and site owner need to clear purpose of what messages should be evident to visitors. In my opinion, improving the communication is an ongoing process. As I evaluate my own sites, or those of clients, these are some of the factors that I consider.

Think you know what you're doing every time you engage in social media? Neither do I, and neither do the social media gurus I spoke to about their biggest social networking blunders. In an effort to learn from others' mistakes, here's a list of some all star errors in judgment from some social media all stars. I'll lead off the order by admitting an error of my own.

There's something that needs to be made blatantly clear regarding the internet: One million unique visitors that spend less than one minute on a website and do not return is not really "traffic." I hear so many companies (and you know who you are) that throw out these lofty, excitable "numbers," as if they're pulling in a large, coveted audience, but that is the equivalent of a million people driving by McDonald's every thirty days, taking a look, and not one going in to order a sandwich.

Viral marketing is the process of using peer-to-peer communications in order to rapidly spread information about a brand or message. The term 'viral' stems from the concept of a 'virus', a self-perpetuating phenomenon which infects whatever it comes in contact with, spreading itself in an expanding outward arc. Your message is the virus. The carriers are your audience. People encounter specific data or ideas daily and pass it on to their friends and other people in their network. All things equal, one can say that information is shared more rapidly when the recipient has a strong emotional connection with the specific message. They adore it. They despise it. They are deeply puzzled by it. It makes them upset. It makes them happy.

I visit a lot of blogs every day and am always coming across new ones with amazing designs. Which gave me the thought that, with blog design being such an important element of the blogging process, why don't I spend some time searching out some of the most creative blogs to provide some inspiration for those looking to design a new theme for their blog, or even those who just want to take a peak at whats on offer. There were so many wonderful designs and I could have quite easily made this a top 100 or even 200, but I only wanted to display what I saw as the most creative blog designs out at the moment. It also makes it clear where their salary comes from. It can be as simple as putting everyone on commission, or paying people for each job that they do. You can even give your employees a percentage of the net profits. If your catering sales people's salaries are based on the company's sales, they have a vested interest in increasing sales and improving customer service. If your catering sales people see this direct correlation between the sales they make and the money they earn, sales will definitely rise. Sometimes, employees will work extra hours. They may come in on their 'day off' or work extra hours in order to bring their commission dollars up. Commission can motivate your catering sales people! Partnership pay also motivates catering sales people to offer superior client service. Their attention and attitude often changes if they have more of a vested interest. Clients will give repeat business and refer your restaurant or catering business if they are properly taken care of by your catering sales people. That brings in more money for the company and for the employee handling the sale. These employees learn quickly that it's a lot easier to have repeat clients than to try to establish a relationship with a new client. This becomes a drive within your employees that motivate them to do well, and continue doing well. This kind of pay is not for everyone in the restaurant catering business. It takes self-motivated, self-reliant people to make it in this type of environment. It makes people more responsible for themselves and the work that they do.
