#1 kayla8 on 25 Jan 08This award will be given to a children's book that switches up the story or the roles of the characters in a traditional fairy tale. These type of books are often referred to as fractured fairy tales. In the book "Interpreting Literature with Children" by Shelby A. Wolf, Wolf says, "...fractured fairy tales tend to bend or even break the routine rules of traditional stories...". For example, the "bad guys" and the "good guys" may switch roles, or the prince and princess might not live as happily ever after as we might have thought they would. Characters who go along with the flow of things in the traditional stories might even take things into their own hands to change the ending of the story in fractured fairy tales. Wolf also states, "...plays on the nature of wolves and the possibility of marriages being not so happily-ever-after or not so honest help to make the point." The books nominated for this category should have a new twist on a traditional story, whether it involves a change in character roles or a change in the plot. Only picture books should be nominated, and they should be appropriate for children ages 6-9. The deadline for nominations for this award is February 19, 2008.
