The Sonny Award for Excellence in Children's Literature on the Immigration of Children to the United States should be given to a book about a child's immigration to the United States. The book should focus on the child's journey to America, struggles and problems with living in America, or joys of living in America. In the book "Battling Dragons" edited by Susan Lehr, there is a chapter on exploring children's lives in other countries. The author of that chapter, Judith Heide Gilliland, writes that "One of the most exciting things that has been happening in children's literature is its exploration of various cultures here and around the world" (105). There is a lot of immigration in the United States today; by reading books that center on this topic, children in the U.S. are then able to understand immigrants' situations. For a book to be nominated for this award, it needs to be appropriate for children in grades kindergarten through sixth and must be either a picture or short chapter book. Nominations for the award should be submitted no later than February 19, 2008.
