Powering the base and SE Highlander models is a 2.7-liter inline-4 engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. These 4-cylinder models come standard with front-wheel drive (FWD), while all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional, and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The EPA-estimated gas mileage for this engine is a very good 20 mpg city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Toyota's Prius hybrid won the top rating by getting 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 mpg on the highway, the Environmental Protection Agency and Energy Department said in a statement today.

Under the hood of the Civic Hybrid is a 1.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that was given a power boost this year. It's also proven to be a very cost-efficient vehicle over the long term due to an excellent track record when it comes to maintenance costs and its strong resale value. Its four-cylinder models are also quite frugal at the pump, delivering 34 mpg on the highway.
