The fuel economy for the Hybrid is EPA-rated at 44 city and 44 highway, a 3 mpg improvement over last year's model.

Under the hood of the front-wheel-drive 2012 S60 T5 is a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 engine that outputs 250 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Volvo says that in performance tests, the T5 went from a standstill to 60 mph in a quick 6.8 seconds. Not bad for a car with an EPA gas mileage rating of 20 mpg city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Powering the base and SE Highlander models is a 2.7-liter inline-4 engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. These 4-cylinder models come standard with front-wheel drive (FWD), while all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional, and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The EPA-estimated gas mileage for this engine is a very good 20 mpg city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Toyota's Prius hybrid won the top rating by getting 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 mpg on the highway, the Environmental Protection Agency and Energy Department said in a statement today.
