When your students misbehave for other teachers - 0 views

  • Most students view specials classes as a break from regular learning. That’s not true, of course, but it’s how they see it.
  • In many students’ minds, it’s not necessary to sit still and listen to the teacher until “real” learning takes place again back in their own classroom with their “real” teacher.
  • So if you can, plan those less active lessons for the days students have PE or other specials that permit them to move around, and on the days when students will need to concentrate during specials, try to plan more hands-on activities in your classroom beforehand.

  • If a particular teacher has a hard time handling your class or certain students in your class, talk with him or her about it when the kids aren’t around. You could say, “I know __ can be challenging sometimes. One thing I’ve tried in my classroom with him/her is ___. I’ve also tried ___ and sometimes that works, too.” Find out what kind of routines and behavior management/reward systems the teacher is using, and share what has worked in your room
  • Don’t put yourself on a guilt trip about something that happened while another teacher was in charge
  • The key to getting students to behave appropriately no matter where they’re at is teaching them to make wise decisions for themselves and exercise self-control rather than depending on teacher control

A good article. Sometimes, it's a struggle to know what to do about a situation that occurred when you weren't around. This article gives a proactive approach.

MyPlate Kids' Place - 1 views

  •
This is a great website for nutrition and healthy living and eating. Pre-K 3 loves the game "Smash Your Food"! We use this to talk about healthy foods vs. "sometimes foods" and why. There are some really great games and activities that allow kids to plan out healthy meals in a fun way (like "Blast Off"). The printable materials are excellent, too ("10 Tips"). :-)

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum - 0 views

  •
Our class will be going to the Intrepid in May for our field trip so this has been a great site for me to revisit. This site also serves to wet the appetite for the kids for the trip and I am able to discuss the expectations we have for them. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City is the only museum where visitors can experience the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the first space shuttle Enterprise, a Cold War-era submarine Growler, a British Airways Concorde, and the world's fastest jets.

Commentary We need better teachers. It's a mantra in education reform circles. And as Congress gears up to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, last rewritten in 2001 as the No Child Left Behind Act, the refrain will only grow louder.

How to Have a Safe, Fun, and Successful Field Trip With Your Students - 0 views

  •
During my first year of teaching, I naively thought that field trips would be easier and more fun than a typical day in the classroom. Then, I got my first taste of field trip reality - my student Andrew got stung on the tongue by a wasp first thing in the morning.** Just a few reminders
