This is a great channel on Youtube for teachers to use. The groups that create these videos take popular songs and rewrite them in order to teach students about different time periods or events in world history. This can be used as a great intro or ending video clip, or as a brain break. Beware- some songs are very catchy and can get stuck in you head. =)
For many current middle and high school students, writing takes shape in all kinds of forms. They send texts, write on social media sites, update their own blogs, and of course, write for school assignments.
This article also points out that it's not all positive though.

Further to my last post, please see another more recent article of June 2, 2014 printed in the Science Section of The New York Times asking the question, "Does handwriting matter?" Please note the interesting points raised here as well as the further coverage of psychologist Karin Harmin-James's 2012 Study on children's brain scans and their handwriting...
Although this article was printed on April 12, 2012, it raises some amazingly valid research points in favor of the necessity of Cursive Handwriting Instruction in schools in spite of the increase in key-boarding. I feel the most impressive points are Indiana Univ. Karin Harmin-James's MRI brain-scans of children and Neuroscientist Norman Doidge's book which discusses how the brain changes and develops neuropathways in relation to habit changes and repeated actions. Further, Doidge's research describes how handwriting and keyboarding require different actions and affect the brain in different ways.

1. Did the assignment build capacity for critical thinking on the web?
2. Did the assignment develop new lines of inquiry?
3. Are there opportunities for students to make their thinking visible?
4. Are there opportunities to broaden the perspective of the conversation with authentic audiences from around the world?
5. Is there an opportunity for students to create a contribution (purposeful work)?
6. Does the assignment demo "best in the world" examples of content and skill?
